Just curious: can DVD's be played on a Blu Ray machine? The reason I am asking is that I can't get Closed Captioning out of my current DVD player, and I have heard that Blu does display CC. Is this true?

I have an enormous collection of DVD's, BTW.

I do not currently have a Blu Ray player, but having said that the answer appears to be 'Yes.'

From Google:

'Since most Blu-ray players are also capable of playing DVDs, which most people still have, there is little need for traditional DVD players any more. Blu-ray players have 1080p video capabilities which is the highest resolution HD that is currently available. A regular DVD player only has 480p.'

Hope this helps out.

Of course they can; all Blu ray players can also play DVDs.

They can, Gary. The better ones upscale DVD's nicer to HD output, but yes all Blu-Ray players can play DVD's.

As far as The Stand goes, they may do it. However, the material is 16mm, so there is not going to be a huuuuge difference in quality over the dvd release. We might get to see the grain structure of the show. :)

Closed Captions are analog. If you hookup a upscaling dvd player or a Bluray player using an hdmi cable, you will get zero Closed Captions.

You will need a player that has analog outputs. Bluray players made since 2012 don't have analog outputs.
