I thought Laura did great in that scene.

Something about the whole thing was creepy and off.

I agree. The scene worked well in the book, too.

In the book, this scene was a bit more involved than the script allowed for in the film and, if I am not mistaken, was a major factor in the loss of Mother Abagail by the Free Zone. The confrontation shook Mother Abagail to the core and caused a crisis of confidence or something that made Mother Abagail feel that she was not right with God.
