That sounds like a question for 'Gary_Overman' to andwer!

Gary, if you are there then please, take it away...

For my part I will say that I have read the novel twice (1997 and 2016) while it is not my favourite King book, it is still very good and contains some excellent writing. I admire it for it's length, scope and depth of characters, and yet it is still not my favourite work by Stephen King.

Such is the length of the novel, that it requires a certain amount of commitment to read, if you have just started and are not 'feeling it.' ten you might want to think again.

For my part I listened to the audio book presentation this time around. The uncut edition read by Grover Gardner is very good indeed, but I would advise against the uncut reading by Garrick Hagon (yes he is an actor from the original Star Wars movie) IMHO he had a delivery that is both flat and toneless a little bit like he is (forgive me for saying it) reading from a book, simply to get the job done.

Please feel free to post with any thoughts,

Cheers for now.

Thank you for the vote of confidence, mr e. Your kind words are much appreciated.

To the OP: as much as I liked the mini-series, and it is one of my all-time favorite DVD's, the book is better. I have read it more than 25 times. It is like an old friend that I want to spend time with. That said, some parts of the book are dry to me. Personally, my favorite parts are the journeys to Boulder and Las Vegas that the characters make, and what happens afterward. I tend to skip over some of the early backstories, as I know them already.

So, yes; the book is better than the mini-series, although like I said, I think that the mini-series is pretty good as well.

I do hope this helps.

DAMN. Can i get you over to The Dark Tower Board? 

Like a lot of King's work, there are always dry spells (especially in the biblical proportion books). I've only read the unabridged version and get bogged down when King goes on a meaningless tangent. There is a lot more of Trashcan Man in the book which i personally enjoyed, and Nadine is portrayed very differently which i also preferred.

Appreciate the kind words.

Something was said a long time ago on this board to the effect that King must think that he is paid by the word. Mr C, I believe that it was you. An apt observation.

Well, the extended version is rather wordy. I like my books with more action and dialogue instead of pages and pages of narrative.

Good point. King himself mentioned (if memory serves, it was in the intro to the C&U version of The Stand) that some accuse him of having diarrhea of the keyboard.
