Could it be more stereotypical?

"The planet of Lumminaire"--->Because "light is good and planets inhabited by heroes are mostly good too"

"Lightstar Crystal"--->Because "Light" and "Star" are good, powerful things and crystals are sources of power...

"city of Luminicity"--->Because "light is good and cities inhabited by heroes are mostly good too"

"Baron Dark"--->Because "less than king is baaad and whatever is dark is baaaaad and barons are specially bad as they are to German"

"Prince Lightstar"--->Because "Princes" are gooood and "light" and "star" are good and powerful!!!

"Legion of Light"--->You know the theme? Don't ya? "Light is GOOOOD"

"Grimskull; Justin's younger brother, who initially worked together with baron Dark out of a misplaced envy of his older brother. When Justin and Dark struggled for the Lightstar Crystal, Joshua interfered. The resulting surge of power turned him into an undead creature, but where Dark and his Skeleton Warriors are pure skeletons, Joshua - who was renamed Grimskull - is still covered in flesh. Grimskull is seeking redemption in his way, by helping his family; he saw the baron's evil during the fight which transformed him."------------->Because "every family has it's own black sheep, but redemption is possible, because the family sticks together at the end, because someone who is a Lightstar cannot remain evil, because having flesh over the skeleton means one is less evil than a full skeleton 'cause one is more normal, 'cause..."

You do realize this is basically a half hour Toy Commercial Right?

how much subtlety are you expecting... because even without this 'campy' back story I'm pretty sure once Little Billy talks his Mom into buying him the Baron Dark and Prince Lightstar action figures he is Not going be staging a stop Motion Kubrick-ian epic Morality play

and since in most cases the action Figures pre-dates the shows Plot; its possible Grimskull was designed to be Baron Dark's "Starscream" and it was the Creativity of the Writers that made him into the 'Black sheep' and 'atoner' instead

It wasn't just a half-hour toy commercial. The series had an overarching story progression as well as solid character development and a reasonably well-developed story line.

Most shows designed simply to sell toys had shallow characters and perfunctory storylines. This was different, more along the lines of Batman: The Animated Series and Monster Force than the majority of cartoons at the time.

Requiescat in pace, Krystle Papile. I'll always miss you. Justice was finally served.
