In 1994..Who Could Have Played Scarlett Other than Joanne

Other than Joanne Whalley, who do you think could have been cast as Scarlett ?

My choice for one is: Liv Tyler, if she couldn't have possibly done at this time then my choice would be either Angelina Jollie or Katherine Zeta Jones.

Rachel Weisz

reply

darling neither one of those would have been good. there is no one that can take the place of Vivian Leigh, and Angelina Jollie is no Vivian Leigh

reply

I have to agree with texasgirl273 that no one could take the place of Vivian Leigh, for that matter although Timothy Dalton does a great job, he is no Clark Gable. Without the original actors, it just isn't the same

reply

If only Margaret Mitchell had written a sequel to Gone With The Wind in the early 1940's immediately after the success of Gone With The Wind. They could have re-cast Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, not Leslie Howard because he died in 1942 or 43. But they could have used some new faces and talent for original characters. With Leigh and Gable together again, and a good production and good story line the movie might have been a success. But Mitchell never intended to write a sequel. If she had, she could have worked on it through the 40's and by the late 40's or better yet the 50's, the film could have been out and in great Technicolor or Cinemascope.

reply

Of course no one could ever replace Vivien Leigh, but I remember thinking at the time that Susan Lucci would have been a better Scarlet than JWK. She was very petite (remember Scarlet's 18 1/2 inch waist?) and could have been the b*tch she needed to be to accurately portray Scarlet. Besides, JWK's voice was completely irritating! Ugh!

I personally wish there had never been a sequel, book or movie, unless Margaret Mitchell had written it and the same actors had starred, as another poster said.

I've always thought that Delta Burke in her prime looked very much like Vivian Leigh and would have made an excellent Scarlett -- but also Catherine Zeta-Jones would have been nice as well. But NO ONE could truly do it as well as Vivian

reply

all the choices you listed would have been far too young at the time. rachel weisz? dont get me wrong i think she is beautiful, but she is such a different kind of beauty from vivien! liv tyler, probably twice the height of viven? angelina jolie, again the look is all wrong.

scarlett was in a sense a doll, that is vivien was. she had delicate features. at least they got that part right with whaley-kilmer. i think the only way people would be satisified is if they cast an unknown, like they did with vivien and GWTW

reply

I agree, Delta in her prime was a Scarlett shoo-in. She was gorgeous with a Viven Leigh-esque about her. Whalley was irritating to me, plain and simple.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat"

reply

Delta all the way. Too bad she's older now. All the other above actresses mentioned are all wrong. A nationwide search would need to be done.

reply

I think Catherine Zeta Jones should have played the part.

reply

While I have to agree that NO ONE could portray Scarlett the way Vivianne Lee did, I think that for "Scarlett", Rachel Ward, with colored contacts would have done a pretty good job.

reply

Kimberly Guilfoyle with CNN news could be considered. What do you think?

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rachel Weisz were both 22 when filming began. Nearly seven years younger than Scarlett when GWTW ended and nearly 15 years younger than when "Scarlett" ended.

Liv Tyler was only 16 when filming began which would have placed her THIRTEEN years younger than Scarlett when GWTW ended and TWENTY years younger than when "Scarlett" ended.

No one could have replaced Vivien Leigh in looks nor in talent.

Also it was a different time and place when GWTW was filmed. That era cannot nor will it ever be duplicated. It is a time and place that is long gone into the history books and permanently etched on to celluloid.

House: Hey I can be a jerk to people I haven't slept with. I am that good.

reply

Actually, I totally agree with you. It's a great film and my favorite!

i'm glad to see that other people agree with my mom and i about Delta Burke.
she definately should've been the one to play Scarlett instead of Johann (or however you spell her name).
she had/has the accent, had the look, she was perfect.
too bad that she didn't get the role though.
maybe if she had, the movie would've been much better...never know though

Lesley Anne-Down. Watch North and South.

Back in the day when the book was first talked about then the movie I always heard it would be Connie Seleca...She had the eyes atleast. I dont know how good she could have really done. Thinking about how Delta Burke looked when Designing Women first started, yeah I could see her in the role too.

reply

I think they should have left this one alone. No one could replace the original cast, and they butchered the book anyway.

Some mornings it just doesn't pay to wake up and chew through the straps.

reply

Connie Seleca would have been completely wrong. She was fine for "Hotel" but she certainly was not a good actress and would not have done Scarlett any justice. DELTA BURKE

reply

Delta Burke certainly looked like Vivien...and may have been able to be dramatic enough for the Scarlett role...but I think Catherine Zeta Jones would have been VERY believable as Scarlett...(although as pointed out in this thread...she may have been too young).

I Really did Not like Joanna at all. She was way too bland...or something... just awful!

When the Scarlett mini-series came out in 1994...so did a Hallmark tv movie..."The return of the Native"... starring catherine Zeta Jones...and Clive Owen... which was much better than "Scarlett". Catherine was beautiful and high spirited...like Scarlett...Check it out. :)

delta Burke looks like Vivien Leigh?????OMG!!!!!Burke was almost 40when Scarlett was made and looks nothing like Vivien in the first place. She has a round chubby face, she was never anything like asex symbol.
I'll go for Catherine Zeta-Jones, she could have been a good Scarlett. She was in her early twenties then and stunningly beautiful. Also, she is agood actress.

reply

The scene in GWTW when India and Mrs. Mead "catch" Scarlett and Ashley together and she is wearing the white hat and blue and white costume she looks exactly like Delta Burke, chubby cheeks and all.

If Delta Burke had had even a glimmer of hope of getting the role she could have lost the weight. She had the looks and the personality to step into the role and do it up proud. And as for her age,it is a common practice in miniseries to cast actors in their thirties and even forties so that they can age them backward and forward. In "Beulah Land" Lesley-Ann Warren and Meredith Baxter, both in their thirties at the time, played from 16 and 18 and into their 60's.And in "True Women" Annabeth Gish does the same, as did Leslie Uggums in "Roots".

As it was, I could not watch more than half of this badly written, badly cast and badly acted disaster.

Delta Burke is the only person that seems plausible, though not in 1994 but rather in 1986 when she was young: she had the green eyes, the selfish charm, the Southern roots.
