the web and the net

what's the difference? the web has things living in it and can't be entered with out protection, the net if I remember had a green color to it and could be entered without protection, that about right

reply

The net was just like saying "the world."

But the web was like some sort of hell dimension where you slowly degraded and creatures lived and who knows what all.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved?

id probably say the Web was more like space and the net was more like the world

This is exactly how I viewed it. The net is confirmed to be analogous to the world in at least one episode (I can't remember which) where it shows all the systems on the net (probably a local network) connected together, and it basically looks like an atlas - in fact you can see a screenshot of it here: http://reboot.wikia.com/wiki/Net?file=The_Net6.jpg

I felt the web was more like space firstly because it had "aliens", and secondly because you had to protect yourself from its effects - just like how you would need oxygen, a pressurised environment, etc. to go into space. There are also patterns and objects in the web that look like phenomena in space - this one kinda looks like a galaxy: http://reboot.wikia.com/wiki/Web?file=WEb.jpg

I do also like the idea of the Web being an alternate "hellish dimension" as one user described it. Though it turned out that some of the web aliens were quite amicable once you get to know them, so not too hellish! :p

It's just like real life:

The Net is all the systems (and only those systems) connected to the supercomputer, so like a private network. (think of a planet)

The web is all the interconnected networks. but in the show it's really represented as the place between the networks. (think of space).

like the web back then it was full of bad stuff and it was easy to get corrupted.

Just like in real life, the Net refers to the Internet while the Web refers to the World Wide Web which is a series of interlinked hypertext documents on the internet. Mainframe's web address would be its http:// address (www.mainframe.com per say) while its net address would be its IP address 1xx.xx.xx.xx.

I always thought of the Web as a mysterious space where you have to be cautious as you surf it.

The Net is just a private network of computers: it could be a set of interconnected computers in a house, a school, a college or a company. It's relatively safe because it's controlled by someone who administrates it.

The Web is literally the internet - where if you make the wrong move you're in trouble. The Web is not administered or regulated by anyone, which is why it's so dangerous.

It's weird how this show got me to understand so much about computers at a young age.

That's pretty much it.

The net is direct, it's organized, it's secure (at least with regards to Megabyte ), while the web is a hellish mess. Broadcast storms can lose packets, line noise can corrupt signals (probably the reason for the degraded sprites in season 3), improper configuration can cause transmissions to fall into black holes; at times it's amazing the darn thing actually works.

[case in point, Pakistan (i believe it was) wanted to block internet access to www.youtube.com from within their country, and because of improper configuration hijacked a very significant fraction of Youtube's traffic into their own webspace]

These days the beast has been tamed somewhat, but it's still pretty wild and crazy.

That's pretty much the theory I surmised. The Net was within a computer or system of computers, while the Web was EVERYTHING..especially the weird space between.

I always assumed MainFrame itself was either one users computer or maybe a main server.

While this description is correct it bugged me that in Daemon's Rising the virus was infecting the entire internet instead of just an intranet. I don't think Daemon's projection scale should've been represented as a global threat.

I hope if this show gets restarted they make an analogy to the deep web.
