What happened to the music?

i bought the 1st season on dvd last week b/c my mom loved the show when it was on tv (i was only 2 when it started) & we've been watching it 2gether. she really wants to know why the music was replaced with some instrumental piano crap, can someone help us?

Sadly (like so many series that go to DVD) they couldn't afford the copyrights for the original songs. So... instead of paying for the rights they opted to replace most of the songs with Muzak tracks.

Lots and lots of television series do this horrible thing. A couple of the worst are Happy Days and especially WKRP Cincinnati. Happy Days had beautiful old songs, they pretty much lost all the songs when it went to DVD. WKRP may be the worst of the worst. The series was absolutely LOADED with beautiful songs. They usually had more than just a couple in each episode. In many scenes, instead of trying to replace the songs they opted to just cut scenes instead. They totally butchered and ruined the series altogether.

It's a huge sacrifice to have lost much of the original song bed but it's better than cutting scenes out. I loved the original song selections, they always fit the feel and emotion of each scene.

Did they remove the Joni Mitchell song when the family visited the graveyard? One of countless beauties in the originally aired episodes.

i haven't gotten to the graveyard episode yet so i'm not sure. i just can't believe they couldn't even afford to have the theme song by The BoDeans... is there anywhere we can watch the episodes with the original music (like online or something)? b/c this is pretty much ruining the show for us =/

Hmmmm now I could be wrong but The BoDean's theme song doesn't show up at the very beginning of the series. When the series FIRST started it did have a piano track. It sounds like they kept the original opening and closing sequence for that first season box set on DVD. The syndicated version of the series did have the BoDeans and their "Closer to You" is heard all the way through season six. The BoDeans should be on the second season box set but someone will have to verify that for you. I'll dig mine out and let you know for sure.

I don't know of any online source other than torrent downloads and that's a whole bag of work to torrent anything. They may not even be available there either.

thanx for the help =) i tried hulu.com (b/c that's 1 of the only places i know to look for full episodes of stuff for free) but all they have is season 3, so i guess we'll watch the 3 seasons that are available on dvd. my mom was really disappointed last night when i told her only seasons 1 - 3 are available on dvd now. is that still the case or did i just read an old post or something?

Yes, only three seasons so far. It took them years to get released too, not a real good sign for the remaining seasons. Check your PM's I have some more info for you.
