I'm a little confused

I am just now getting into this show via Netflix. I never watched it as a kid. I'm confused about one part though? Is it supposed to be set in the future? Alot of the characters have crazy outrageous hairstyles but not much else seems REALLY futuristic. Anyone care to help me?

I remember seeing it as a kid back in 95 when it ran in Denmark - and I never really thought of it as futuristic... But now - seeing some clips on youtube - I see where your'e going at. Never the less, I don't think the producers intended for it to be set in the future. But this whole Orca-project is supposed to be the latest technology and very modern (for the time-period) so they probably found it natural that the persons were too... :D

It is supposed to be set in the future. I know it doesn't really seem like it some of the time, but they say things about having a one-world government and all the rain forests being gone, things that haven't happened. Some of the electronics are kind of futuristic too.

It's definitely supposed to be set in the future. Although I always appreciated that they didn't try to go overboard with that idea. The hairstyles were always a definite giveaway, especially back when it was on. I think it's funny how those things can be seen out of context. Like a TV show in the 90s would tell you everything you needed to know about a character based on what kind of car they drove, what they were wearing, etc., but now it will be taken out of context especially to a first time viewer. For example, Melrose Place was intentionally supposed to be to be campy, but new viewers would just chalk it up to it being a 90s show that's just dated.

I don't think YEAR mattered as much as they wanted people to remember that it was what scientists dreamed of, future technology and amazing animal/ocean study.

It was just a creative device.

Notice that when they're on the mainland, the style was that of the 90s.

ORCA was a stylized place.
