What went wrong?

I thought the first episodes were pretty decent (all things considered), but after they solved Teri's murder the show just went downhill to me.
The whole Emma Sands plot was just boring, and Teri 'returning from the dead' as a new character was hilarious. If they wanted to keep the actress in the show so much, it'd be wiser not to kill her in the first place lol.

It became so bad that I feel the producers/writers gave up on the show even before the season was over.
Were the ratings that bad?

I actually feel the opposite. The first couple of episodes were a bit boring and it didn't get really good until after Teri's murder was solved. In my opinion it was always a bad show, the whole concept was ridiculous from the very beginning, but when they came to accept that it became more entertaining.

I feel differently about Melrose Place, where I wish they had kept the show more grounded instead of going way over the top.

Yep, still agree with that. Although I have to point out that the show did go downhill in the last couple of episodes when the child and Julie's sister showed up.
