anybody seen this?

I've been reading "Marmalade Boy." And I love it! I have never seen the tv series, so I was just wondering if it was good or bad...

I don't want my last words to him to be, "Cut your toenails, they look like fritos!"

I like it, but the animation is totally old school X_X Well, it IS '94, so that's expected. Anyway, it's pretty cute. It's sort of like the manga in it's original plot, but as it spans about 72 episodes after awhile they just go off on their own. They keep the characters the same for the most part though. Of course, I'm only at about episode 30, but so far it's very good!

reply

Yes, the animation is very low-budget. I've noticed times when the characters' mouths are moving, but the dialogue doesn't come for several seconds. And at times, it descends to South Park-quality. You can actually see the cels being slid around! But that is pretty much commonplace for series like this, so it is forgivable.

The only annoying part about the anime is how different it is in the third season than the manga. The writers obviously know nothing about America, as you will notice when you see things like people wind-surfing during Spring break on Long Island.

All in all, it's a great series, but I don't think it ever really attains the "classic" status of the manga.

I never saw this, but I heard a rumor of a live series starring the over hyped(which I can't stand!) F4 singer, I can't remember his name, some Taiwanese pop idol. Is that rumor true?

reply

It's true. I never seen it, but in my view, it didn't seem to have the quality of the Anime. The F4 singer in that live action series is Ken Zhu, he plays Yuu Matsurra.

So it is, well I really don't like F4, or that show Meteor Garden, to me, it's overrated, and so were they. They were very popular back in 2003 here in the Philippines, but I never went with the flow(teachers and students liked it, ugh!), I remeber hearing the live Maramlade Boy, can't remember where, but they called it Miki Loves Yuu.

reply

Im sure there are other teenagers who go palces besides Florida or Mexico on spring break.
there are way other worse examples of the west in anime. like when theyre are english speaking characters...played by japanese people who cant speak english
but its similiar to any foreign language character played by a non foriegn person in the u.s.- we just cant identify it because we dont speak that language.
hoser.

reply

On the fansub I don't remember the animation being that bad.

To me, the series starts to drag. I think 72 or 76 episodes was just too damn long. And the final plot dramatics were kind of lame.

reply

Well the earlier episodes definately had the "shaky screen" effect. But after a while it gets better. Afterall pretty much any anime from the 90's and down don't have that good animation. I have all the episodes on dvd.

I don't know. Something, uh, involving genitalia and shoe polish.

I've seen this. I don't have a complaint really about the animation, I grew up with "old school" animation.

I agree that they made this show WAY too long. I had a love/hate with it -- hated the drawn out drama but had to see what was going to happen because of the dang teaser clip at the end of each show.

Watch it for the music at least. I loved the music and the opening/closing credits.

reply

I don't entirely agree. The animation quality is very bad even for the 1990s and earlier or "old school".

The music is even more dated than the animation. It has the same music of the 1990s (and sometimes the 1980s)

The writing quality should make up for the lower quality animation although it is not my favorite thing to watch. A girl dating what is supposed to be her stepbrother? I found this series by accident and for some reason I was unaware of that part.

The English Dub seems to be low quality. Or at least it is different. The songs are in Japanese, the credits are in Japanese, but there are English words along side in the opening credits. The end credits are separate. They have the original Japanese version and then they have a lower quality English version on a black screen. You will get to hear the theme music twice!

I have skipped about two dozen episodes and discovered the animation and background quality has improved significantly.

Also, there appears to be an improved soundtrack.
