HELP PLEASE: Question about program played at similar time

I realize that this show was shown on PBS, which had varied programming in different areas. I live in the location of the first PBS SCETV set-up (South Carolina). I need some help concerning a show that was shown at a similar time as this show sometime between 1993 and 1996.
My memory may be failing me, and i may have changed the channel. But i believe this show came on in very close proximity to Magic School Bus, mid-day I believe (I was 4 or 5 years old at the time).
The show I'm remembering was about a crew of alien type puppets on a big space ship. The steering wheel was actually a set of bike handlebars, and the captain, who was blue and gold and had a funny shaped head, could put it on Auto-Pilot and reflect on the day's lesson. The fairly benign enemies lived inside a large brown planet with craters.

This has been driving me crazy since 1996.
Any help would be great.

I know what show you're talking about, b/c I have the same vague memories, but unfortunately I cannot think of the shows name.

I shall do my research and see if I come up with anything. :)
