In Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years, tragedy strikes the Call household when Hannah is killed in an explosion. Devastated by Hannah's death, Newt leaves Curtis Wells a lost and aimless man, traveling from town to town. Eventually he turns to bounty hunting and begins to come to terms with the darkness in his soul. After living on the trail for two years, Newt returns to Curtis Wells where he re-establishes himself as a gun for hire. New characters introduced into the second season include Mattie Shaw (Kelly Rowan), who operates the local gun shop/funeral parlor, and Amanda Carpenter (Tracy Scoggins), an ambitious woman with a shady past who turns the Lonesome Dove Hotel into a popular watering hole.

The death and explosion are in the final episode of the First Season (Tales of the Plains)

To elaborate a bit on what people had to say...

*** Spoilers Ahead: You have been warned ***

A gang of outlaws comes in and takes over Curtis Wells. In the course of the townsfolk taking it back, there's an explosion in the building where Hannah is and she is killed in either the blast or the resulting fire.

So does anyone know, was this planned (to kill off hannah) or did the actress want out of the show?

reply

It was planned. The ratings for the first season were only so-so, especially with the young male demographic. They wanted to make the second season darker and grittier. Also, they really didn't know what to do with Hannah, who spent a lot of time henpecking Newt. So they wrote the final episode so that she would die in an explosion. Reportedly, the actress found out that she was being written out of the show when she read the script.

In my humble opinion there should have been an episode after the one where Hannah was killed. There is such a big gap that doesn't capture where the series ends and the outlaw years is picked up. They try to fill in some of the holes but there is still just one episode that would have blended the two a little bit better.

They actually could have had Hannah survive the explosion and fire of episode #21. In the final scene with the building blowing up, you are viewing the scene from the front of the building, where there are windows. In the second to final scene, Hannah and the other lady are fleeing out what appears to be the back door, because there are no windows, and the door is a course rough board door that would not be a front door. If they wanted to keep Hannah in the series, they could have easily opened the 2nd season at the same scene, with her and the other woman having made it out the back door, possibly injured, but alive.
