Better than 'I'm Alan Partridge'? You betcha!

So much substance and subtle hints to the dark world of Alan Partridge, brilliantly timed and excellently played! One of the finest TV series to come out of the UK!

reply

No, not true sorry. I love both and Knowing Me, Knowing You is done brilliantly and is cleverer than I'm Alan PArtridge however, the bottom line is that I'm Alan Partridge is funnier.

reply

You are bang wrong!

As an American (and very few know of Alan Partridge), I find all 3 series totally friggin hilarious. There seem to be a small cult of us here in the U.S. that greatly appreciate British humor and like watching something different. Current favorites (and I know some of these are older but takes a while for us to find 'em) - Alan Partridge, Coupling, and Green Wing. Also, Men Behaving Badlyis probably the funniest show EVER!

Im American and i find the comdies from the UK really funny! I've always been a fan of British humor ever since I watched Mighty Python: Flying Circus re-runs back in the day. I'm Alan Partridge and KMKY are freaking hilarious! I do like American comedy as well, namely Saturday Night Live from 76' to when Will Ferril left the show. Everybody Loved Raymond is also a good American comedy. but there are far better British comedies than there are American ones.

My Family
I'm Alan Partrdge/KMKY
Blackadder(all of them)
Anything with Mighty Python
Benny Hill
Coupling

Also a lot of British crime dramas rival the best crime dramas in America imo!

Ha! I hope you realize that its called MONTY Python.
If you dont then you should really watch the Holy grail

Coupling ain't funny either. Seriously one of the most crap cringeeworthy shows to come out of Britain in the last ten years.

reply

First three series of Coupling were funny. Extremely well-written. Fourth lost it, mainly because Jeff was AWOL.

For US viewers-

Also check out Armando Iannucci's (Partridge co-writer) political comedy The Thick of it- stunningly brilliant and billed as cross between Larry Sanders and Yes Prime Minister. That's as good as it gets in comedy heaven.

Just thought I'd throw in a few other British comedies that you missed:

Blackbooks

Spaced - Written by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) and Jessica Stevenson (???), most scenes are a parody of a well-known movie. Perfect for film-geeks like me.

BrassEye (not a sitcom, but a fake 'HARD COPY'-esque show... one of the most brilliant shows of all-time, period. I can't believe it only lasted 1 season+ a special)

I'm completely with you on that. I saw a little review blurb that said something to the effect of "If you liked The Larry Sanders Show, but wished Larry had been more of a jackass, then this show is for you." How very true. I love it! I think that blurb was about I'm Alan Partridge, but, to my delight, it really applies to KMKY, too.

The first IAP episode I remember seeing was Basic Alan, and the 'threw the monkey in the sea' conversation with Michael had me on the floor laughing (but maybe I'm just a bad person).

It's too bad BBC America are such a bunch of screw-ups when it comes to scheduling things that are worth watching. They show waaaay too much of that home improvement and make-over crap.

"Nobody move. My name's Nixon. I'm a tax collector."

reply

They show make-over rubbish over there too? Same here.

reply

I'm just now getting into the world of Alan Partridge. I'm not sure where to start though. Knowing Me, Knowing you is the first tv series right? Is there only 1 season? Then after that comes I'm Alan Partridge which has 2 seasons. But people are saying something about "all 3 series"... what other series with Alan Partridge is there? I understand Steve Coogan has done a lot of other things with the Partridge character outside of any sort of show (specials, etc.) but what is the other series? Thanx!

reply

you have it all right, the chronology goes: Knowing me, knowing you (and then a christmas special called knowing me knowing yule) and there are two series' of I'm Alan Partridge.

The whole "three series" thing's just refering to KMKY as well as the IAP serieses. So that's three... know what i mean??

I recommend Peep Show also, great comedy.

reply

Though it was recommended months ago, I must also suggest everybody watch Peep Show. That show is amazing!

THAT'S NUMBERWANG!!!

reply

I personally agree with the OP, but then humour is perhaps the most subjective of all entertainments. If you haven't heard the original radio series, track it down, as far as I'm concerned it's the funniest thing Coogan ever did. (On the Hour is also worth tracking down)

"Now this won't hurt a bit. Well, maybe just a little bit."

Yes we receive your Brit comedies dreadfully late but nonetheless "Black Books";all of Alan Partridge;the first couple of seasons of "Coupling" & "French & Saunders" and "Trick the Pony" were all smashing.Must admit though that early Benny Hill was quite clever(well before "Hills Angels") and another oldie which I have not seen in over 20 years is Dave Allen & Doctor in the House"(clips are blessedly on YouTube).I have never understood though the hype over "Absolutly Fabulous" and never thought much of "Little Britain" & "Green Wing".Just my opinion, cheers from New Jersey.

reply

Little Britain is not as popular as it likes to think it is. I think it is pants.

Much funnier, wittier and more acurate observational comedy has to be the League of Gentlemen.

reply

They're both amongst my all time favorites.

It's hard to say which is the better.

reply

Spot on! The essence of Alan is in his chat show (radio and tv). I enjoyed both tv series but found that by the 2nd series he was overplaying his facial expressions to the point it had lost its humour. He was at his best on the chat-show when he was visibly annoyed with his guests whilst trying to remain relatively professional. It just annoys me that comedies like Little Britain and Catherine Tate get national exposure and loads of revenue from merchandising while KMKYWAP is so much funnier yet remains hidden away.

Hey, it's just my opinion.
