Part 3 Best Forgotten

I just saw Part III on the new DVD set of "North & South". I watched it a decade ago when it was broacast on ABC and hadn't seen it since.

I recommend the DVD set heartily, however just skip over part III and go to the second side of the DVD for the extras about the miniseries, which are wonderful.

i agree. i started watching part three and i am very confused because george is getting busy with madeline. where is constance? and where is aurie? i didn't watch much past the part where bent takes over that trading post.

i will take your advice and watch the other side. i loved this mini series and so happy to have it on dvd.

Where are Constance and Orry? Lol if you had started watching Book III you would have seen Bent kill Orry and Constance!

reply

I am watching Book II and am at the spot where Bent kills Constance. No Billy, and no Brett.

This Book so far has been only a shadow of the the first two.

The actor who first Charles Main in Book I & II: is he the same guy who plays one of the Klu Klux Klan members? Looks like him.

reply

No lol thats cliff de young, i remember him as lipton on the movie F/X, but he looks a bit like charles main in the first two.

reply

One of the Klan members plays a friend of Charles in Book II. I forget the character's name though.

"Fear will push you into haste, and haste will push you into the grave..."

reply

lieutenant pickels, played by gary grubbs

reply

only 2 scenes that Brett is in very limited part for Genie Francis no billy at all

reply

the story was a lot smaller because there was only three episodes and they had to condense it down

Shawn is cool, remember that :->

reply

I'm sorry to admit this, but I haven't read the books. Is Brett and Billy in the books more often?

reply

I'm a bit worried about the way Madeline's kid seems to shrink as the years go by!Charles's boy is 5+years but Maddy's seems to be about 10 months old and downsizing..............:-). By and large book III is ,"a book to far", real soapy rubbish. It amazed me that JJakes did the introductory voice-over!

reply

I read the book and I thought it was a great read. However I agree with you the movie was just a disgrace. They either need to go back and make this one again to be closer to the book or just wipe it out entirely. Because the third book is great but the movie did not do it any justice at all.

reply

The easiest is to wipe it out entirely.

reply

No, Billy and Brett aren't mentioned that much in the novel Heaven and Hell. Well, they might have been but they weren't mentioned enough for me. Yeah, I'm so disappointed no Parker Stevenson and very little of Genie Francis.

Unlike everyone else, I didn't have a problem with Madeline and George getting together in Book 3. However, Book 3 had some very weird plots holes:

Bent surving the fire was totally bogus. He should have died.

You see Brett visiting George briefly in one scene. Other than that, Billy and Brett are totally absent.

The character Cooper (Orry's oldest brother) threw me off a lot. Not to mention he was not very likable. Neither was Charles new love interest.

Ashton not knowing that Mount Royal got burned to the ground. Did she not know that her mother died also?

There was huge discrepency on the ages of Madeline's baby and Charles baby. At the end of Book 2, both babies were around the same age. But for some strange reason, Charles' son was a lot older than Madeline's in Book 3.

reply

EXACTLY, there were holes in there!!

Well I do think George and Madeline made an cute couple, I was just in shock they were hooking up after a VERY short time together. I was disturbed.

I KNOW, i'm in genie francis denial here. i need to watch book 2 ASAP. i miss billy hazard the most. i love billy hazard. he makes my life happy, lol.

Cooper Main was ugly. Blegh.

Adding Cooper Main to "Heaven and Hell" was the most ridiculous thing! He hadn't been present or mentioned in the first 2 movies, although he was in the novels.

I haven't read the novels in years but I may go back and re-read them. They were different in many respects from the movies. I don't remember that Brett and Billy were present much in the 3rd novel, because they had moved to California. The actor who replaced Lewis Smith as Charles was MUCH too young to be Charles, who would have been older by then. I agree re/the discrepancy in ages of Madeline's and Charles' respective babies. Orry Jr. remained a babe in arms throughout the entire picture; he should have been walking.

Ashton was completely estranged from her family and had no way of knowing that her mother had died or Mont Royal had burned.

Also the beginning of "Heaven and Hell" (the movie) was soooo ridiculous! Ashton and Bent are driving to Orry's house, supposedly to ask him for money. Then Ashton says she will visit with Madeline while Bent talks to Orry. What!!!! There's NO WAY Orry would have talked to Bent or given him money. Of course Bent knows this and was just using it as an excuse to kill Orry, which he did. Ashton started screaming that "you were supposed to ask him for money!" But she would have known that Orry couldn't stand her and would never have given her a cent.
