Ku Klux Klan

How come Janis Joplin's song "Mercedes Benz" is used as a Klan song in this production? It is set in the 1860/70s, but according to Wikipedia that song was first written in NINETEEN-70. There is no mention of it being a standard which just had new lyrics put to it.
