The biggest difference in season two (other than the fact that each episode was stretched to 30 mins, as opposed to two 15-min installments) was that the show was no longer serialized. Instead of having one continuing story, each episode had its own story that wrapped up by the time the "Oddities" end-credits rolled. The stories were just as good -- but without the to-be-continued endings, viewers didn't consistantly come back each week as they had the year before. With no other shows in tow for the "Oddities" showcase (since they only produced one season's worth of episodes of "The Maxx"), "MTV's Oddities" left the air for good soon after the second season of "The Head" was rerun.

The episode joneshiro is referring to was "The Paquale Mendosa Show," which was the first episode of season 2. Mendosa appeared in several first season episodes (he was a Geraldo-like reporter who was seen on the characters' TV's) and he continued to pop up from time-to-time. The episode was essentially a recap of season one, with everyone returning on Pasquale's stage to tell the tale (and update where they are now). The final scene of the 15 minute episode featured the final appearance of Gork and the whole "invasion" storyline. The other 15-mins was rounded out with a making-of.

The credits shows The Maxx, The Head, and then another group of characters... was there ever another series planned?

reply

I can't recall if it was under the "Oddities" title, but "The Brothers Grunt," about subteranian dwelling humanoids searching for one of their own who ran away to the surface, aired at around the same time as "The Head" and "The Maxx."

"The Brothers Grunt" and "The Head" were both showcased on MTV's Animation Weekend, around mid-1994. Soon thereafter, each got their own show, "The Head" being aired under the title "MTV's Oddities."

On the opening of "Oddities," behind the ringmaster dude who introduced the show, there were posters hanging for both "The Head" and "The Maxx," but I don't recall ever seeing a poster for another series.

correct. there were not any other seasons/shows immediately planned for a 4th season of oddities, just 2 seasons of the head and one of the maxx.

the "animation weekend" compilation from 1994 only featured the original short of 'the head', and was put together to promote/launch 'the brothers grunt' (which itself spawned off of mtv bumper animations)

i assume that they picked it up and extended 'the head' into a series a few years later (notice the more crude style in the first 5 minutes of the finalized show.)

Season 2 of the Head was not that great. After all of the Saves the Earth stuff, the characters became boring in regular situations. The second season was probably cancelled because it actually kinda sucked.

has the second season been made available online yet?

reply

It is available on amazon video on demand.

I was a little unclear. MTV's Animation Weekend was meant to launch "The Brothers Grunt," which was its own stand-alone show (a show that was more excruciating to endure than "The Star Wars Holiday Special!"). The original "The Head" short ("Chapter 1") aired numerous times over the course of that weekend and ended with a "to be continued" or "coming soon" which indicated the series was forthcoming. "Oddities" with "The Head" made its debut a few months later.

Season 2 is available on the amazon burn-on-demand DVD... but they completely omitted "Inside the Head," a making-of that aired as part of the second season, and there are no extras. Would've been nice if they'd included a pdf of the graphic novel that wrapped up the show, but since they skipped the making of...
