'Friends' creators defend Rachel-Joey hookup

4. That time that Joey and Rachel were a thing

Speaking of storylines that raised eyebrows, Joey and Rachel’s ultra-brief romance in the show’s final season is often cited by even the most hardcore Friends fans as a near shark-jumping moment. But the creators are ready to leap to the defense of the doomed pair. “We liked it,” Kauffman says. “It felt real. That’s what happens in groups of friends and it was vulnerable for both of them.” Besides, the fact that it felt so wrong to so many viewers is what made it feel right to the writers. “It was wrong in a really cool way,” Crane enthuses. “You get to see them come to that realization, and it let Joey show some emotional colors that he hadn’t up to that point. We liked it because it was dangerous. We knew people would go, ‘You can’t do that!’ and that was one of the selling points for us.” Funnily enough, among the people who went, “You can’t do that!” were Aniston and LeBlanc. “They were a little nervous about it,” Crane admits. “And we had to say, ‘Everything you’re nervous about is exactly why we should do it.’”

That said, they didn’t try to push the actors out of their comfort zones as a rule. “We tried to really listen to them,” Crane says. “If there was something they weren’t comfortable with, we would usually defer to their instinct unless we could really defend it. We were really ruthless with ourselves [in the writer’s room] and threw out a tremendous amount of material, either stuff within stories or whole stories. I’m sure we lost things that were probably better than we thought they were at the time, but that was the journey we were on.”

It was probably the Hardcore Ross and Rachel couple fans that hated it. I thought it was a good storyline. Ross had moved on and Rachel was single so why not? they gave it a shot.

reply

I'm not a Ross and Rachel fan and I hated it. It was awful. We already had 2 couples from the group. Now we had another? Dumb. Jennifer Aniston and Matt Leblanc had zero chemistry as a couple. The whole thing was cringeworthy, and not intentionally. And since they broke up like 2 episodes after they got together, what was even the point?

reply

That's a pretty stupid reason to not want them to be together. I look at it like a real life situation. 2 people in a group of friends would never say they can't be together because two of their other friends already hooked up. They're going to get together if that's what they choose to do. I thought the story worked fine. It wasn't rushed, and both characters had their doubts for one reason and another before they took a chance at it.

Would I have preferred to see a Joey/Phoebe thing instead? yes, but I'm just saying I didn't have a issue with this either.

reply

But it's not real life. It's a tv show. These are characters. They are written to do things. And it was poor writing. It wasn't done well, and was unnecessary.

Joey and Phoebe didn't need to get together either. I'm very glad the writers refrained from ever doing that. That was a great decision.

I don't care if you liked Joey and Rachel together. You are free to think that. But YOU are the one who made the asinine comment that only Ross and Rachel fans hated it, and you're the only one who seems to have a problem with how people feel about it.

reply

Yes and TV shows adapt their storylines based on real life experiences in order to have its audience be able to relate and enjoy the experience, so again your logic is terrible. The writers would never say "oh we can't put these two together because these other two in the group were already together". If your logic was the case they would have never put Monica and Chandler together since Ross and Rachel had already happened first.

Anyway 9 times out of 10 it is most likely the hardcore fans of the Rachel and Ross relationship that would be against Joey and Rachel because they're the ones that wouldn't want either character to be with anyone else. It certainly makes a lot more sense than "Oh we can't hook these two up because this and that character of the group already got together". I thought the writers did a great job of transitioning Charlie's time with Joey over to hooking her up with Ross which gave them that great opportunity to explore Rachel and Joey so they did end of story. If they didn't do it then Ross would just have been dating Charlie while Rachel and Joey would have had nothing going on. You know what I call that? crappy writing, and if you'd rather have that then I'm glad you didn't have anything to do with the decision making.

reply

Why are you so hostile? Jesus christ. You did say only Ross and Rachel fans hated it. That was wrong. Most fans overall hated it. And someone just replied saying why they didn't like it, and you for some reason took it personally and seem upset about it. If you can like them as a couple, other people can hate them. Relax and take a breath.

reply

Uh actually I never said it was factually only the Ross and Rachel couple fans. I said that a big chunk of the people who hated it are most likely the ones who wanted Ross and Rachel to end up together. Which is factually why the show put Ross and Rachel back together by the end of the show. Anyway if you're going to call me out for being "hostile" try aiming that focus at he/she also for the whole "I don't care what you think comment within that long text theirs. I said my piece on the subject and I'm moving on. Adios.

reply

Are you referring to when I said, "I dont care if you like Rachel and Joey?". Lmao are you serious right now? I said I dont care because that's your opinion and you're free to think that. You liking Rachel and Joey doesn't bother or have any effect on me. Ergo, I don't care. Meaning that's fine you think that, just like it's fine I hated them as a couple.

Did this seriously need to be explained to you? Are you saying you do care that I don't like them as a couple? Does it upset you that I don't like them?

reply

I agree that they had no chemistry but did they ever actually get together? I thought they decided it was too weird and never actually pursued it.

reply

They were officially dating but when it came time to have sex, they both felt it was too weird, so they ended it. I kinda felt like they used it simply as a season 9 cliffhanger because they were running out of ideas.

reply

Joey and Rachel had sex.

NO

Friends - 10.09 - The One With The Birth Mother
Honest, Rach? Rachel: Well, believe it or not, it's true. When Joey and I were together, he was wonderful. He was thoughtful and mature. And for the one week that we went out, he didn't sleep with anybody else!

reply

They are talking about Joey´s maturity. He didn´t sleep with anyone else, that doesn´t mean that they slept with each other. The whole point of the episode where they try to get intimate with each other and they can´t is the reason they ended their relationship.

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

S10 E3
Chandler: So you and Rachel tonight huh?
Joey: Yeah, its actually our first official date.
Chandler: So tonight might be the night. You nervous?
Joey: No this is the part I´m actually good at.

The same episode they don´t sleep together and break up.

reply

I agree

reply

I liked Rachel and Joey together more than Rachel and Ross. They seemed to really understand and respect each other. Ross and Rachel had YEARS to try to make it work, and it wasn't until she wanted to leave the country that they decide to get together? Not even having a baby together was enough for them.

reply

It was an awful storyline, even the actors hated it.

reply

It was an awesome storyline, even the actors loved it.

reply

Why do you lie???

reply

the question is why do you lie.

reply

No, that's not the question, because I did not lie. You did, however.

reply

Wrong. that's not the lie, what you said after me was the lie, however.

reply

You just can't stop lying, can you?

reply

One of the better storylines in the show in my opinion. Well, at least one of the more realistic. I've watched a bunch of friends try this over the years. They hang out all the time, have a lot in common. They experiment to see if there's any chemistry there and just like with Joey and Rachel, there usually isn't.

reply

Taking a dump is also realistic, that doesn't make it an interesting, entertaining or funny storyline. And in this case it really wasn't.

reply

I guess it doesn't bother me cause the show was already so bad by this point it's like whatever. Mind you I love the whole show. But the quality really does nose dive later on.

reply

I agree it went dowhill (after season 5). Storylines like this played a big part in that, in my opinion.
