How long were monica and rachel out of touch?

Do they ever say?

reply

I can't remember if they say, but I'd guess like 7 or 8 years. I think they lost touch when they went to college, so that's about 3 or 4 years, and then in the pilot they're in their mid 20's so that's another few years.

Nope. You can only guess. And sometimes it'll be off because the writers weren't consistent with ages.

They were still friends in college, because that's when Rachel had her nose job that Jack complimented. And it's mentioned at Thanksgiving that she changed her major again.

However, they had split by the time Rachel was seeing Barry. And it didn't seem like Monica was around when Rachel made out with Melissa in Senior year of college because Monica had never met her, and only heard about their make-out session.

In season 1, Monica was 26. And hadn't really been close with Rachel since their Freshman or Sophomore year of college, I would guess.

So not too long. Maybe around 5 years

LOLI know. Actually she was said to be 26 twice in the first season, but they said in the pilot that Ross is 26.
Ross: I'm divorced! I'm only 26 and I'm divorced!
That is in the dialogue that was admitted from the original televised version, but he is certainly not two years older than that.I believe that Rachel is generally regarded to be 24 at the start of the series, and I would guess that Monica is the same. That would have a very realistic two year separation between the Geller children. If we take Ross saying that he is divorced literally, then Carol has to have left him maybe three months before the pilot.
On average in New York, and I must stress this is a rough average, an uncontested divorce usually takes about 3 months,
But I don't think Ross is necessarily being literal.

Yeah, and then Monica said when secretly seeing Chandler something like "Rachel is the one person I've told everything to since high school." Except a good chunk of time you obviously didn't speak at all.

They don't really explain why they fell out of touch. I know some friendships when people move or something they just lose touch, but I think it's weird if someone is your bff from age 5-20ish you just casually lose touch without there being any real resentment from Monica that she was cut out or something. In the pilot, she introduces Rachel as a fellow Lincoln High survivor, but I'm not sure how early in the show they explained they knew each other much earlier.

It's obviously one of those things where a clear reason wasn't established by the writers, so we just accept that there are some inconsistencies.
