Joey was the worst friend...

I just watched the episode, I think it's from the first season, where Chandler is nice enough to get Joey a temp job where he works. Chandler did Joey a real solid by doing that when he needed some kind of work the most. How does Joey repay him? By turning it into an acting gig and blaming his character "Joseph" when Joseph brown noses the boss and gets Chandler in trouble.

"It's not me it's just Joseph"...omg! I would've smacked Joey and kicked him out of the apartment...not like he paid the bills for it anyway.

Let's also not forget the episodes that show he's a total hypocrite about sex. Like the one where his younger sister came to him pregnant and she was like "I'm sorry I tried to wait until I was 34 like you did but I just couldn't". You can't be a total man whore and then tell your sister *beep* like that because you don't want her to have or be used by someone like you. If you don't like guys treating your sister that way then why do you go around treating other women that way? They are all probably someone's sister too. What a hypocritical douche he is!

Or what about him making Chandler get in the box over Kathy?! I'd have told Joey right where he shove the box right after I'd finished talking him how much every bill I paid for him was....

I could go on but it's late and I won't but suffice it to say Joey is the sh!itie$t Friend of the whole group. I'd rank the group as follows:

Chandler
Monica
Phoebe
Ross
Rachel
Joey

Indeed. Chandler paid bills for him for years. Over $3000, before Joey cuts himself.
In The One That Could've Been, Joey treats him so terribly. "Oh gosh, I'm being so rude, Rachel do you want something cause Chandler will run along and get it." All the insults on Chandler over the years, "Ross can handle himself, it's not like he's... Chandler." Joey was terrible over Kathy and compared Kathy to Rachel to get Ross on his side. Joey decides that he is gonna move out just like that and take the foosball table too despite coasting on Chandler's money the whole time. I could go on too. Joey and Phoebe were the worst friends.

Had to have been more than $3000. Rent, food, utilities in NYC for 6 years? Plus all the acting classes he paid for. I know someone somewhere has done the math. Yes, Joey was an awful friend.

Joey did a lot of crappy friend things, but we can't hold anything against him in The One That Could've Been because it wasn't meant to have actually happened.

I hate joey in the box episode. Joey angry about Chandler and Kathy kissing is stupid.
First... He dated Two Women At Once and said "It's not like we're exclusive."

You forgot the episode he steals Monica & Chandler's food . Season 6 episode 13.

To be honest tl;dr but I agree as long it's a Joey drag

Have to agree about Joey. I mentioned it before. Joey was a pretty good friend to the women.

But with Chandler and Ross, he was less than great. But Ross and Chandler are geeks who don't have many friends, so they put up with his less than good qualities, because Joey is one of the few they do have.

Joey treats Chandler like crap. Any time Chandler was less than perfect, Joey would pout like a child, and need Chandler to do something embarrassing before accepting his apology.

The box was one thing.

Then there was having Chandler wear that blue lipstick, and call himself a pretty girl.

Chandler hated that ugly bracelet, and Joey throws a fit and doesn't let up until Chandler wears it, and gives him one.

Chandler mentioned how he didn't think that Vegas movie would be anything too good. Joey throws him out of the car on the bridge, then throws his clothes out on the street. Even after Chandler proved to be right, and his movie was shutdown, he still ignored all Chandler's calls while working as a Gladiator in a hotel. Then later when he talks about the hand-twin, he has the nerve to get an attitude with Chandler, stating "Are you un-supporting me again?!" When Chandler was right the last time.

Then him always bringing up how he's hotter than Chandler and Ross, or how they suck with women. Talking about how he can easily beat up both of them.

He thinks Monica is cheating on Chandler

Joey "I'll wait right here, in case the dude comes out."
Chandler "Is that necessary?"
Joey "Hey, I know you'd do the same for me. Not that you ever have to because I know how to keep my women satisfied. "

Joey "I have to figure out how to repel this woman. Hey, you guys repel women all the time. I've seen you do it. You get something going with a woman, but some how you manage to kill it."

Then one instance where Joey is rejected by a woman, and he turns to Chandler and wonders if that's what being him is like.

Arrogantly saying he'll let Chandler have the Dutch Girl.

Saying that he specifically thinks of Chandler during sex when he doesn't want to climax too soon with a woman.

Etc.

The one thing I can't hold against only Joey is him being a hypocrite because they all are, just about.

When it came to their group, everything was peaches and cream. They could treat people badly, and nobody think anything of it. But if outsiders do it, it's a crime.

Look at how Joey has no problem humping and dumping women. When he gets dumped by Erin, because she didn't feel a spark, Rachel and Phoebe get an attitude with her and call her a tramp. So she's a villain for doing that to Joey, but they don't lecture him about the way he treats other women the same.

Or with Joey wanting to beat up the Noisy Guy Upstairs for sleeping with another woman, and hurting Phoebe. But again, he does the same to numerous women -even giving them fake-names so they can't track him down. Ken Adams.

With the whole Rachel vs. Emily thing, all of them treat Emily like a villain because she wants Ross to stay away from Rachel.

Then there's Phoebe -biggest one of them all with hypocrisy, who sleeps with random men all the time, goes on dates with stalkers, is into very kinky and dirty sex, and likes old men. But she doesn't want her brother with Alice. Or tries to play morality police when Ursula is doing porn. She had a right to be mad that Ursula was using her name. Perfectly legit. But when she goes to Ursula's apartment, first thing out of her mouth was disapproval about the porn movies. She doesn't bring up the name issue until a guy yells for Ursula, calling her Phoebe. She goes to say all of them should be ashamed, and that they're all disgusting. Or how she demands certain things from her friends, on grounds of her beliefs, but doesn't respect anyone else's. She insults them constantly, but can't take criticism herself.

I get your points about Phoebe. You are right about her bad moments. But I rewatch the seasons a lot because it's one of my favorite shows. The more I rewatch it the more I find myself hating Joey. A lot of it has to do with his reaction to the Kathy thing. Like him comparing it to Chandler kissing Rachel when he was talking about it with Ross...effed up! In no way was it like Chandler kissing Rachel. Joey and Kathy weren't that serious and he acted like a petulant child over it. That would have been the end of the friendship if I were Chandler.

I feel like everyone overlooks Joey's flaws way too much because he's supposed to be "the lovable oaf".

I agree with Chandler and Monica being the top 2, but both Ross and Rachel were so much worse than Joey.

Rachel was the absolute worse, with Ross almost as bad (especially in later seasons).

reply

Agreed I rank Phoebe right above Joey for being unnecessarily cruel but chandler put up with way too much crap from Joey. I just saw the bracelet episode and when Joey moves out recently and it's ridiculous. He also treated Ross poorly and Ross had to apologize when he correctly pointed out that Joey wasn't in a position to turn down acting jobs with all of his credit card debt.

Joey was stupid for turning his temp job into an acting gig but I thought the part was funny where the boss asks Chandler if he has the reports yet and Chandler says "I have rough numbers" and Joey goes "This company was not built on rough numbers, right?" and the boss says "That's right. Chandler, get me the reports." and Chandler gets all mad at Joey.
