Thongs not a thong

I don't get it...

"You said you would wear a thong" "Not A thong, THONGS" "You really should gave been clearer on that".

Is this because I'm not American?

reply

Thongs is another name for flip-flops

Quite possibly. Here are some images of "thongs." Scroll down and you will notice that two very different things are both called "thongs."https://www.google.com/search?q=thongs&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi91cec45TRAhVm0oMKHRRjDLkQ_AUICCgB&biw=1117&bih=492&dpr=1.71

It's not even an American term.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

They're called thongs in Australia. Theyre called flip-flops pretty much everywhere else.

It was an odd joke for an American show to make (but an obvious one).

That's interesting because my entire childhood I'd never heard the term flip-flops before...Any shoe that had straps between the toes were called thongs. This was in the '80s in Southern California. The first time I'd heard of flip-flops was in the '90s when the term thong became more synonymous with underwear.

My wife grew up in New England and called the footwear thongs. She thought that maybe it was a regionalism, but apparently not.

That's so interesting! I'm an Aussie, and it was annoying when thong meant something else! Did you find that annoying too? We called the underwear thong "G-string".

For me, a G-string is a small triangle of fabric held on by elastic strings. A thong has a lot more fabric, but still not very much. Obviously, there are items in between.

Haha thanks, I have never heard flip flops called thongs, though I can see the connection :)
