There would be some recurrent joke like "Chandler made Carol gay"
Probably yes. Since lesbians were more readily accepted than gay men in those days, the writers would have had more room to expand upon their storylines, like having the lesbians get married the way they did...Any storylines written for a gay Chandler at that time most likely would have been done with care and caution and way less controversy, so as not to upset male viewers too much.

shareLesbians are still more "acceptable" than gay men because straight men in general find lesbians hot and straight women don't mind them. On the other hand straight men in general are bothered and or repulsed for gay men and straight women either don't mind them or are bothered too (some even repulsed too)
