Why would popular cheerleader Rachel be friends with fat Monica?

seems them are from different castes.

Their families were friends, so why not?

Having a fat friend when you're a popular hot girl makes sense. Your hotness stands out.

They were friends as young kids, who don't care about looks that much, and then it just carried over to high school.

I got the same feeling - childhood friends

Pretty much what Cursedchild13 said. Always an obvious answer.

Monica and Rachel were friends when they were 6. So they developed a bond before sex, boys, classes, and popularity. And thus, Rachel genuinely cared for Monica, even after becoming the popular girl.

Had Rachel never even met Monica until HS, for example, she probably wouldn't have given her the time of day.

Like many others said they were friends since childhood and it went on to high school.

But I do have a theory about this. That Rachel was probably not very nice to her during this time.

For one when Amy came to thanksgiving she said something like "No Ross's sister is some fat girl that followed Rachel around in high school".

That always made me think that Rachel mocked Monica when she wasn't around (sorta like "I don't know why she is always hanging around but I don't to be mean about it her") and didn't encourage her to hang around her.

But I do think Rachel did like Monica but just around fellow classmates. That's why we see her be friends with her during the Thanksgivings and prom. There's no one else around.

That's Amy's shallowness, that's not a reflection on Rachel. And I'm guessing Monica knew a lot more about Rachel and vice versa than Rachel/Amy.

True but I still feel my theory holds weight

It's possible that it happened that way but I think most tv shows/movies have that one character who is only friends with one of the popular people and gets ignored by the rest of the group so I imagine she didn't make fun of her behind her back.

Because it says so in the script

I think it's somewhat odd that Monica and Mindy didn't know each other. Since Rachel knew Mindy for many years.

While I think everyones theory holds up- Rachel is confused when Monica says they "went to different high schools". If she didn't hang out with her around her other friends than why the confusion?

Because Rachel like Monica as a friend and didn’t see her as someone who was over weight.

One of my best friends in high school was one of the most popular girls in school. She was the team mascot too. I was short, ugly thick glasses nerd. But we clicked. She was able to be herself around me and didn’t have put on a popular girl rep as she called it. She liked being herself and was relaxed with me. If any of her friends make a rude comment about me she stuck up for me and actually ending a friendship with one girl who didn’t like me because I was a nerd. I see Rachel as doing the same thing. When around Monica she didn’t have to be the fake perky energetic cheerleader. Rachel could be Rachel.
