Where to next?

Where to next?

Time to choose another show! Wow! It's been such a long time. Earth 2 really took a long time to pass.

Anyway, please, now nominate two shows you think you'd like to watch with us next.

PLEASE PROVIDE LINKS FOR THE IMDB PAGE OF YOUR NOMINATED SHOWS. Like this [link=tt0061287 ], except with no space before the final bracket. I ask this so we make sure the show exists and the SHOW'S TITLE LOOKS DIFFERENT. THANKS A LOT!

These were the shows best voted in the last round. They should be remembered when choosing the next one:

2) Life on Mars
3) Better Off Ted
4) The Unusuals
5) Twin Peaks
6) Dr. Who
7) Do Over
8) Sandbaggers

Nominations to enter the voting process are limited to two shows of 30 episodes or less. Please avoid fractions of shows or single seasons of long-running shows: there are so many interesting one and two-season shows we haven't picked yet.

Nominations are open and will close on Sunday, May 22nd in the evening. Voting will take place from Monday, May 23rd to Friday, the 27th. The winner will be announced on Friday evening, or even earlier if everyone has already voted and we agree it's OK to declare a winner. Then one week later on Friday, June 3rd, 2016, we can start (unless people want one more week off or someone is having difficulties finding the winning show).

That's it. We have always managed to find something good about every show we have chosen and as hard as it is to believe, this has become a tradition passed from friend to friend since 2007.

Any questions? Just ask.

Please check on the thread I put up last Sunday for details of my nominations
Star Cops (1987)
Blakes 7 (1978)

First and foremost, I'd like to reiterate my best wishes for you and your family in the hopes you'll all be dealing with the current situation the best way possible. I shouldn't be easy, but I'm sure you'll find the strength to move on.

Anyway... I have to say something about the nominations. I thought we had cleared some things out after our little Dr. Who incident last round, but apparently things didn't get to be clear enough, unfortunately. If it's up tome, Blakes 7 clearly doesn't qualify as one of the shows we can watch. Regardless of the storytelling particularies, this is obviously a four-season show and I wouldn't like to watch two seasons and then leave it knowing there are two more seasons which could, even in some minor way, contribute to the understanding of what we just watched. And it would take us *forever* to do four seasons.

The reason we have these limitations (30 episodes or less, preferably cancelled shows) is to draw a line between shows we can make it practical to watch and, well, any other show. I read your reasons as to why you'd think the first half of Blakes 7 could be considered a show in itself, but if we admit this reasoning, then practically any other show could go as well.

A few examples:

Sliders, Season 5 - Sliders lasted 5 seasons, but hey, there's a sort of reboot on season 5 with the exit of Jerry O'Connell, and it's practically a new show, with a new cast and new stories.

24: Live Another Day - 24 lasted eight years, but one could always claim the seasons offer independent stories with little or no connection among them.

American Horror Story: Asylum - AHS is an ongoing success which is not likely to be cancelled any time soon. But hey, AHS runs in the Emmys as "miniseries," after all each season has a new story, with the same actors, but different characters.

Earth: Final Conflict, Season 1 - I just loved this show's first season. Then it went downhill fast when they changed the protagonist. It practically became a new show.

The Twilight Zone, Season 2 - Its an anthology, so any portion of any season offers independent stories. I picked season 2 at random.

Torchwood, Seasons 1 and 2 - I loved this show. The real story of Torchwood is told in the first two seasons then there's a bunch of deaths, an overhaul and Season 3 tells an independent story ("Children of the Earth") and so does season 4 ("Miracle Day"), which is even shot in the USA unlike the other 3 seasons.

As you can see, we can find loopholes for just about any other show, but these shows don't qualify because they are part of a larger universe that is told in the totality of the work, and not just in the portion we choose to watch.

If the group would prefer, we can include Blakes 7 as an exception, but if it's up to me, I'd like to ask you to pick a different nomination, please.

I see that one of the shows I wanted to nominate has been removed from youtube. I guess that will be a constant battle.
So my two.

American Gothic: 22 episodes Youtube and Dailymotion

“Visit Trinity, South Carolina, a small town with more chills than charm. Sheriff Lucas Buck won't let anyone - including local doctor Matt Crower or the determined Gail Emory - stand in the way of his evil plans.”
I have not seen this show for years but this was the first show that I dialoged on the internet with strangers about so thought it would be fitting for me to nominate it to this group. I really liked this show. I wonder if I would feel the same now?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486657/reference
Dresden Files: 12 episodes Youtube and Dailymotion
It is hard to find on Dailymotion because of all the Dresden Files ebooks but here is a link to episode 1 on dailymotion http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rqj1x_the-dresden-files-s01e01-birds-of-a-feather_fun
Or search on dailymotion this way dresden files s01e01

“A Chicago-based wizard works as a private investigator.”
I usually am not a fan of fantasy but I have been listening (has become my commuting background) to the books that the show is based on and enjoying it. I have seen this series and remember being sorry it was cancelled.

I think this group may have done the Dresden Files a few years back. Maybe madp can post an updated list of all the shows they've done already.

You guys may have not paid attention, but I always post the previous winners on the very first thread posted on the current forum. In this case, this one:

I guess we think alike. This is one of my favorites, and I've already nominated it once. Just one suggestion for linking: you get the "tt0111880" part and add [link= ] and you get [link=tt0111880 ] (without space) and voilà, this is what we see: American Gothic (1995)

Ha! We do think alike! That was going to be my second nomination. I'll pick a new one then. Again, using the "tt0486657" code we have The Dresden Files (2007).

reply

Would it be a good idea to have the past winners listed every time we open for a new vote? Just a standard blurb on the voting instruction page. It would help new people know what has already been done. Also, I really don’t know all the shows that have been watched. I know they did Brimstone but am not sure if they did The Dresden Files.

reply

Well since the Dresden Files has already been nominated by somebody else, my nominations are:

1) Twin Peaks (1990) (30 episodes) - This one is so famous it doesn't need any explanations or introductions.

2) Better Off Ted (2009) (26 episodes) - After so much flip-flopping, I'll stick with this one.

I have to admit I haven't checked for availability. My theory is that even if I can't find it, someone else just might, so if people get interested in one of these shows, we look into the matter more closely. Personally I use bittorrent, something some people have reservations about, but if it were not for torrents, I wouldn't be able to watch most shows I get, since they are not internationally available otherwise.

Okay I give up !! No Brit show has a chance of nomination. However I have a wide variety to of shows I like , here are two all American shows that I love

I don't think that's true. I've nominated a Brittish shows every time. We just did The Prisoner last year. We would have done UFO but it was a tie with The Prisoner (09). We would have done UFO but you changed your vote for some reason and gave the prisoner 09 a second place vote and created a tie.

I"ve nominated the U.K version of Life on Mars three times and you never voted for it. It came in second twice, we would have watched that instead of Total Recall 2070 or Earth 2 had you voted for it. You were the deciding vote for a British or an American show 3 times and you voted for the American show every time.

The problem with Blakes 7 is it's 52 episodes over four seasons not that it's a British show. The criteria for nominated a show is a show that has less than 30 episodes that usually only ran a season or 2. The general idea is to find a show that was good or interesting but was cancelled too early. British shows in general have far less episodes than American shows so it's usually never a problem.

I checked Logan's Run and it's available for streaming on Daily Motion. I checked The Invisible Man and it's on You tube.

Not entirely fair. "Invasion: Earth" and both "Prisoners" were winners. Besides I've pushed "Life on Mars" for a while, with no success, unfortunately, and UFO has been nominated at least twice. There are several British shows with 30 episodes or less to choose from. But thanks for understanding and nominating new shows, though youcan still keep "Star Cops" as it's eligible.

If you think being British among mostly Americans is difficult, imagine being Brazilian! For this reason I've decided to change one of my nominations just to see if a Brazilian show has any chances.

Oh man, I was ready to vote for Better Off Ted. This screws up my vote.

Common, you can't be serious with that nomination. It's all in Portuguese with no subtitles for one. Then it's all fragmented on You Tube.

"tt0111880" part and add [link= ] and you get [link=tt0111880 ] (without space) and voilà, this is what we see: American Gothic (1995)

Trust me I tried and I will try again next time. Hopefully with better results

No Brit show has a chance of nomination.

These are some Brit shows that are on my list for nomination in the future. I just have put other shows first. I have quite a list!

Murder in Suburbia: 2 seasons but only 12 episodes so would work

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries

The Bletchley Circle: 2 seasons but only 7 episodes

Berkeley Square

And I'd consider...

Life on Mars (2006)
Ashes to Ashes (2008)
Black Mirror (2011)
UFO (1970)
Joe 90 (1968)
Mr. Sloane (2014)
Collision (2009)
The White Queen (2013)
Moonbase 3 (1973)

...all of which with 30 episodes or less.

That Brazilian show is all in Portuguese with no subtitles. And then it's all fragments into small segments. You can't be serious with that nomination.

reply

Oh, well, back to the drawing board then. If it were a movie, I'm sure I could find something. But I doubt I'll find a TV show in English or English subtitles. I'll change it back.
