New inquiry - votes required

JohnQ1127 has suggested some alterations in the way we're voting for new shows in order to make ties less frequent. So, I'd like to know where you stand as far as these changes are concerned. In other words, please let's vote and decide.

Query 1 - From now on, should we vote for five different shows instead of three to add more points to the voting and lengthen and separate the ballot?

Query 2 - Should there always be a second round of voting with the two most voted shows so we really make sure the winner is the show most of us want?

Query 3 - Would you consider taking part in an anniversary commemorative viewing of The Time Tunnel in the near future replacing one of our next shows? Or maybe in parallel to our Friday viewing activities?

Query 4 - What if instead of voting we each get to pick a show? So one of us would pick what we watch this time and it would be pre-decided who would be next down the roll of all of us. New people would be put after the last name.

I think that's it. Let's say this question will be open until Friday next week, all right? Just to make it fun and easy for me, votes in green again, OK?

reply

OK, I might just start then.

Query 1 - From now on, should we vote for five different shows instead of three to add more points to the voting and lengthen and separate the ballot?

Yes. Initially I'm favorable. I'd be willing to test that in the next couple of rounds and then decide whether the changes work and should be definitive.

Query 2 - Should there always be a second round of voting with the two most voted shows so we really make sure the winner is the show most of us want?

No. I think a mandatory second round will just increase bureaucracy. A second round should only be adopted in case of a tie, otherwise no.

Query 3 - Would you consider taking part in an anniversary commemorative viewing of The Time Tunnel in the near future replacing one of our next shows? Or maybe in parallel to our Friday viewing activities?

Yes, but with reservations. I think that would be a great opportunity for the new gang meet and interact with the old one. But I would only make The Time Tunnel second viewing official if everybody was happy about it. Otherwise I'd take part in a parallel viewing. Anyway, we don't even know if The Ancient Ones would be interested anyway, so this is still just a possibility.

Query 4 - What if instead of voting we each get to pick a show? So one of us would pick what we watch this time and it would be pre-decided who would be next down the roll of all of us. New people would be put after the last name.

Initially, for me, no. But I can change my mind if most people prefer that option, because what really matters isto find a system people are happy about. Personally I love the voting process and would miss it if it were gone.

I would be interested in what Brimfin thinks because he is our 'number man'.

I already posted this on the other thread but I think this would be a way for everyone to get a show and also in looking back I see people come and go and I wonder if they just kind of give up. It is not important to me if one of my shows is picked but I am sure it is to some.

Ok I have a curve ball for you. What if instead of voting we each get to pick a show. As the ‘new kid’ I would be last. So one of us would pick what we watch this time and it would be pre-decided who would be next down the roll of all 5 (6?) of us. New people would be put after the last name. (This would not work if our group got very large). Yes, we would have to watch shows we maybe have no interest in but I am sure I am not alone in that already happens. This way everybody has the same chance to at least 1/5 of the time having a show they really want to see. Also, it might be incentive for new people to stay because they know for sure they would be able to pick a show at some point.
Edit: I just wonder if some would hang in there longer if they knew for sure that in the future they were going to be able to pick a show they wanted to see and discuss.

Again, I've seen that ball long, long ago. But I've updated the inquiry. So the issue is out in the open now.

A HUGE NO

As TTT would be a one off how about a top ten only.
The whole 30 episode titles put before us for voting, we choose our top ten.
10 pts down to 1pt ,it's all added up and the top ten watched.

Hey, "Top 10" is actually a great idea, in my opinion.

MadP, I think you made some very good suggestions and you're doing a very good job trying to reach a compromise & settlement.

Query 1 - From now on, should we vote for five different shows instead of three to add more points to the voting and lengthen and separate the ballot?

YES. I think this assures that everybody votes for at least 2 shows that aren't his own, it also expands the ballot. I would be in favor of voting for all the nominations in order, (8 show ballot, 10 show ballot etc).

Query 2 - Should there always be a second round of voting with the two most voted shows so we really make sure the winner is the show most of us want?

NO. I don't think that's necessary if you expand the ballot. You could just have a run-off election if you get a tie with a 5 show ballot.

Query 3 - Would you consider taking part in an anniversary commemorative viewing of The Time Tunnel in the near future replacing one of our next shows? Query 3 - Would you consider taking part in an anniversary commemorative viewing of The Time Tunnel in the near future replacing one of our next shows? Or maybe in parallel to our Friday viewing activities?

That's actually 2 questions and should be two separate Queries. And the first query is a bit too broad.

Query 3a: "Would you consider taking part in an anniversary commemorative viewing of the Time Tunnel in the near future replacing one of our next shows? Yes/NO I think it would have to come to a vote. I probably wouldn't vote for it but I wouldn't necessarily mind watching it. But in general I"m not in favor of repeating a 30 episode show when there are so many good choices we haven't even approached.

Query 3b: "Or maybe in parallel to our Friday viewing activities?" YES. I think this is the right compromise. I think we should watch TTT as a parallel or simultaneous bonus show or a 2nd show. This would be a type of bonus to our regular choice. I don't think it's that big a deal to watch two shows once a week. Also you could just start it on the anniversary date. So hypothetically we could watch UFO starting now and then simultaneously start watching TTT as second show in September. Also, TTT would be a voluntary extra bonus, nobody would be compelled to participate.

Query 4 - What if instead of voting we each get to pick a show? So one of us would pick what we watch this time and it would be pre-decided who would be next down the roll of all of us. New people would be put after the last name.

NO. I'm against this one because it's dictatorial with one person having his own choice regardless of what the other people think or feel like watching. You could have a situation where 4/5 people hate the selection and couldn't do anything about it. It's also unfair to the 4th & 5th person because they would have to probably wait 1 1/2 years mabye 2 before they could make a choice.

Query 1 - From now on, should we vote for five different shows instead of three to add more points to the voting and lengthen and separate the ballot?
I would say NO for now, but YES if our membership ever drops to 4 or less (heaven forbid it would be less than 4). I think with 5 people or more there is less chance of a tie and an easy resolution if we have one. The biggest problem we've had since I joined was when there was just 4 of us and we had a head-on collision between THE PRISONER (2009) and UFO.

Query 2 - Should there always be a second round of voting with the two most voted shows so we really make sure the winner is the show most of us want?
NO, I don’t really think we need that.

Query 3 - Would you consider taking part in an anniversary commemorative viewing of The Time Tunnel in the near future replacing one of our next shows? Or maybe in parallel to our Friday viewing activities?
Obviously YES. But I think the parallel viewing would be our best bet – especially if dtmuller can get some of “The Ancient Ones” to join us.

It’s an interesting thought, but JohnQ1127 made a good point that someone might pick a show that everyone else dislikes. I know I was a little frustrated at first when I joined that it took a while before one of my shows was picked, but now it’s happened twice. JohnQ1127 submitted THE PRISONER (1967) that we did, and now we have picked UFO, which micheallevenson1 submitted. Only lorkris has not had a show picked, but he’s still fairly new and I’m sure his time will come. So I would say NO.
