Does anyone else wish that Chrisy and Neil.......

Had kissed in the original series? Even once?! Christy kissed David a couple of times but not even a peck from Neil. It would have been fun to see, imo. Even if Neil had boldly planted one on her, and she slapped him afterward for being forward.

I know Neil and Christy kiss in the last Christy movie but it's not the same. I wanted it to be Kelli Martin's Christy who kissed him, not the other actress. I mean we waited all the time to see them together and it's not even the "real" Christy with him! It felt like an imposter kissing him-all wrong!

I just like the original actors and series, so much better than the follow-up movies. If you can't tell. Lol.

There was a Christy movie made without Kellie Martin? I didn't know that! Was the rest of the original cast in it or was it all new actors??

reply

There were actually three movies made to tie up the end of the story, and unfortunately most of the original cast was not involved. I think I heard at one itme there were seven actors from the original series; I know Opal McHone was the same, and (thank goodness!) so was Dr. MacNeil--but Christy, David, Miss Alice, Ruby Mae, Fairlight, and dozens more were played by new actors.

The three films (in order) are "Return to Cutter Gap," and "Choices of the Heart," which is a two-movie story with the films "A New Beginning" and "A Change of Seasons."

It is my personal opinion that these movies are a complete disappointment for Christy fans, save for the fact that they finish the story. Dr. MacNeil is always a joy to watch, so you might want to watch it for his sake, or just to see the end of the story, but the other actors leave MUCH to be desired.

Oh yes, a Christy/Neil kiss (ONLY Kellie Martin and SFM of course) would have been wonderful. Alas...it never happened. But then on the other hand it sort of adds to Neil's charm and character that he is such a gentleman about it. Even though he obviously has feelings for Christy and is jealous of the attention she gets from David, he always treats Christy with the utmost respect and never attempts anything "improper" whatsoever. I think this is one reason Christy trusts him so much as a friend and confidant, as opposed to David who does attempt some liberties with her. I can also see how Neil was likely sort of scared a little too about the whole prospect of starting a serious relationship with someone after what happened with Margaret, and probably was taking things slow to be on the safe side emotionally.

I understand what you're saying about Neil taking things slow and respecting Christy and I admire him for that. I just wish the series could have run longer so that we could have seen the real Christy and Neil kiss eventually......

reply

I hate to admit it, but me too! I watch the Old Series over and over, and I just wish that they would have kissed too!

I watched "The Road Home" last night and...arrrr!!! That final scene with Christy standing between David and Neil always leaves me sooo frustrated!!! It dawned on me, I wonder what would have happened if instead of just sitting on his horse looking at Christy, Neil had jumped down, run to her and smooched her right in front of David! lol I can just see David's face... We all know Christy and Neil never kissed in the original series, but is there an episode/scene where you really really wish they had? I cast my vote for the scene in "The Road Home" where Neil and Christy are walking by the pond and he puts the wreath of flowers in her hair and looks at her so lovingly. I wish Neil had kissed her then and the moment hadn't been interrupted by the fire alarm sounding.

reply

Dr. MacNeil lightly kissed her on the cheek when she was asleep at his house after the beam hit her in the fire.

I really detest how tv studios never make up their minds over cancellations early enough to get a decent wrap up on shows. they either end with cliffhangers (like Christy) or they get a rushed botched job (like Stargate Atlantis). annoying!!!!

But yes, the 3 movies, while awesome because they finish the series, are disappointing because only Neil is well real. lol. The acting from everyone else is abysmal!! Miss Alice has no passion, Christy is mediocre and David is ok but really whiney. *sigh* so annoying.

The original series was actually filmed in Townsend, Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains. That's why it looks so real. I know because my friend Mike Hickman played Birds' Eye Taylor. Many of the smaller roles were actually played by locals who were native to the area. Can't believe they filmed the PAX movies in the Canadian Rockies! What a shame. . . .

Sorry y'all....
But that anticipated 'kiss' would never be.
Neil battled too much a (married) conscience to ever cross that boundary with Christy ('every time I look back upon it...[very sorrowfully] I'm still a married man").

Recall the one or two episodes his long-lost Margaret (Miss Alice's daughter -who'd 'ran away' to join a circus, because she was allegedly 'unhappily wed' to Neil -marrying so young to a much older man. What on earth was she thinking????) had returned home for a very surprising, not-so-welcomed visit. Much as Neil respectfully acknowledged Margaret's unfortunate presence, he obviously yearned for more 'friendly' relations (with Christy.) However, any mere suggestion of it, otherwise (from a married person), would have been highly inappropriate, for the day.

Yes, there was obvious jealousy: David's interest (in Christy). However, that's only typical when a young, single, attractive female is amidst a crowd of men :)

if they had of gotten just one more season, i reckon Margaret would have died for real finally. Probably in the typhoid epidemic that would claim Fairlight. (was always curious as to whether the studios would have killed her to follow the books or saved her to be popular.)

while Neil might still have some feelings toward Margaret, he is a very proud man and what Margaret did to him is something he would never be able to get over entirely. they might have managed friends but that is all. so, when she eventually died, moving on with Christy would be easy.

*sigh* Only in my brain can this occur. Grrrrrr

BGFan, really? There were a lot of Christy fans that liked those movies? Maybe that was the only Christy they had seen if that is the case. I am not sure how anyone that saw the original would have been all that impressed with the movies. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate that they had SFM back and that it was a way to get some resolution, but for me it just felt all wrong. If they could have just had SFM, Kellie and Tyne Daily back, that would have been all they needed. There was no other Christy but Kellie Martin. I agree with you that she just gave a depth to the character and came across as if she was just born to play that role. Also, it was weird that the age difference between SFM and KM never bothered me, but in the new movies the age difference between him and the new actress did. I think it is because SFM and KM had such natural on-screen chemistry, one that really sort of defied age. I don't know, maybe it wasn't even the age difference with the new actress, it was just that I didn't feel the two actors were on par with each other in those movies. SFM was just in a different playing field experience wise. KM and SFM always played so well off of each other, just a natural flow that made you believe they cared for each other and made you root for them....made you forgot you were just watching actors playing a part. With the movies it was just so forced you couldn't get lost in any of it.

I was just watching the DVD's this evening of the old show. It is sad that we'll probably never see another show like it. Too old fashioned for the kids of today. For me, I remember I had just got out of high school when the series first began and while it was old fashioned, it hit me in a nostalgic sort of way. The main cast was just so perfectly suited to those roles. I love when you get to see magic like that on screen.

I used to post a lot on the Christy forums on PAX (and even made some great friends that I still talk to) and yes, there were a lot of us who were thrilled to get the three movies. Not all of us were thrilled with the actual movies though. We were happy they made them so we'd have our closure, but the movies still left a lot to be desired.

As soon as I heard that ABC was buying the Family Channel, I knew Christy would be cancelled -- regardless of where the story was at. Let's face it, ABC is too politically correct to allow a wholesome, family oriented, religion based series proceed or even "wrap up." It's really sad because this was an excellent series that the whole family could watch, it had a decent following of fans, but it just wasn't "mainstream" enough. I suppose if Christy were a Madam and was trying to train a houseful of hookers, it would still be on TV. Sex and Violence sells.

Exactly what I was thinking! It's posts like yours (wg1) which make me wish IMDb message boards had a "thumbs-up" feature.
