Why was Chef! cancelled?

Only three series for one of the funniest shows ever to grace the small screen? What ever happened to end it so soon? It's not like Lenny Henry went on to Oscar-winning stardom.

reply

well he was in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as the shrunken head.

It's been my experience that British series rarely go for more than two or three season.

TOWER, ALERT AIR TRAFFIC, ROMEO, TANGO, ZULU IS NOW AIR FORCE ONE.

reply

I know, I love chef. I miss it, never see it on anymore here.

I was catching episodes on Sky TV (UK) at the start of the year, and picked up the 3 series box set cheap last week...good stuff!

If Book was in Intelligence B4 finding God,does that mean He's a Shepherd Spy? (Thank You,Spike..)

reply

Well, it may have been canceled because 1 guy bitching constantly at his staff, never listening and constantly getting proved wrong became tiresome to viewers.

Add a constantly whining wife who marries a man with a career she knows will keep him at work a lot and then complains about never getting any personal attention, and I suspect the joke wore thin.

I really enjoyed Chef! when I first watched it, but as it progressed into season 2, and eventually season 3, it became very repetitious.

reply

Yes, I thoroughly agree with the above. I know that Gareth was obnoxious and a perfectionist and would be sheer hell to work under. But that wife of his was something else. She lived in luxury and had all the material prosperity she could ask for. Yet she complained and complained and bitched and whined and after a while I honestly got sick of it. I really don't know what Gareth saw in her. So hard to please.Imagine Janice in thirty years! What an ugly old sow!

reply

Interesting you bring up a problem with Janice. I thought the constant remarks about her not getting enough sex got so old. I know one of the staples of sitcoms (and certainly Britcoms) is the wife who's husband isn't giving her enough attention in the bedroom. But the writers of Janice's character just seemd to get stuck in a rut. It was ridiculous, it seemed that every line out of her mouth and reaction to any situation was that she wasn't 'getting any'. "Janice, its raining outside.." "REALLY? MAYBE YOU COULD ACTUALLY TAKE ME LIKE A WILD ANIMAL ONCE IN BLUE MOON IF ITS NOT TOO MUCH TROUBLE!" It seemed to get that bad.

Oh well, show as 15 years ago, its over.

reply

I agree with Janice bithcing about not getting any -- old. It also sounds resentful and it is as if the character is in need of therapy.

I was actually okay with their divorce.

You're laborers, you're supposed to be laboring! That's what you get for not having an education!!

reply

you make it seem like Janice didn't do anything herself. She was the manger of the restaurant.

Chef was one of the best things ever aired on TV in USA. By my standards, with all my blessings heaped upon it, this series should have run on until today in 2015! I hope Lenny is well and gets another lucky chance, at another "Chef", 20 years older taking up where he should have never left off! Yes, restart the great series why not, and it could (this time)be even funnier/wiser than the great 93-96 run. The terrible TV of USA 2016 needs to be redeemed now. With you(Lenny as Chef)PBS can revive a dead channel 13 here in NYC. We desperately need to laugh once again here in USA, so do please save us from ourselves in this bitter TV wasteland of the USA!

Cos it was $h1te. Like everything Henry touches, the un-funniest comedian ever.

reply

sorry but u must be the unfuniest person alive not to like chef!
either that, or u are just really thick!

In The UK shows don't get "cancelled" - they just run their course then that's it - end of - story finished. They don't go an on and on and on and one like a dead dog limping on and on likie in he USA. Think quality not quatity.

Monkey Tennis !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you Julie {perhaps it's something to do with the M67, the motorway to nowhere}
3rd series was relatively poor, but, all in all, "MR BRUCE ???" was brilliant.

As an addendum, any "Man" who declares himself too tired should have his gonads removed and served to him as a fricassee.
Even cadavers can become tumescent.

Actually the problem was that they tried unsuccessfully to change that formula in subsequent seasons. If they had actually stuck to being repetitious with the original premise and also tried a lot harder to keep the other four supporting cast members from the first season who left, instead of changing things up, the second and third seasons might have been a lot more interesting and successful.

Personally, I totally agree. I really missed the original cast. I think they could even still have added Gustave without much difficulty and they could have used him for conflict (he could have clashed with Lucinda, for instance).

It's better (I find) to have a delay between watching the seasons -- they stand up better if watched as if they were individual shows. I really never liked that the restaurant didn't become successful. It was almost insulting having two people (Chef and Janice) who were supposed to be excellent at what they do not be able to make a success of the business. I think that even with a successful restaurant, they still could have had conflict -- they could have done more not only with the kitchen staff but also with the customer interaction ("salt!!!") and the "morons" (little babies").

reply

Maybe because his character kept sampling the dishes and not cleaning the spoon he tasted with.

I think the ratings went down for the third series and it ran out of steam.

Its that man again!!
