I can still remember as a kid seeing that, and being pretty annoyed that the episode was interrupted.
Fortunately, it was a rerun, so I knew what happened in the end.

If I remember right, the killer turned out to be the overbearing mother of one of the rival beauty contestants. She killed the Beauty Queen victim out of anger because the victim was somehow cheating (I think she got some kind of cosmetic surgery that wasn't technically allowed under the pageant rules, but she was sneaky enough about it that she wouldn't be disqualified for it), and so the mom was furious that this might cost her daughter the pageant.
