why is jackie chan dubbed in the cantonese version?

i saw this movie in the cantonese version and for some reason jackie chan was dubbed...it clearly wasn't his voice!

What's up with that?

Actually it was the usual practice right up until the late 90s in Hong Kong to record films silently and then dub all sound (including dialogue) later. The actors didn't always do their own dubbing. Police Story 3 was the first Hong Kong Jackie Chan film to use sync sound (i.e. sound recorded at the same time as filming), although whether he dubbed his own voice on any films prior to then I don't know.

thanks for the info!

why would they do this before the 90's?

reply

He never did that in a Hong Kong movie before Police Story 3.

But he did use his own voice for his U.S. movies. The Big Brawl (1980), The Protector (1985). And I believe in the Cannonball Run movies we can hear him in Cantonese. So we get a glimpse how he would sound back then if he were to dub his own movies.

That's what I thought as well.
Thanks for this thread.
