One of my favourites

I found out about this film while looking for anything that had Sandra Bullock. I had never heard of this movie before my search. I had no idea Sandy's part would be so small. But despite that fact, this movie instantly became one of my favourites. Along with While You Were Sleeping. Just read the IMDB review for this movie (...Hemmingway) by Robert D Rupelnas. It says it all. It is all about friendship and loneliness. It doesn't matter what age you are, everything rings true here. I hope more people will see it.

Wrestling Ernest Hemmingway is one of my very favorite movies. I'm so glad Sandra Bullock was in this movie. Otherwise, I would never have gone to the trouble of digging it up.

This isn’t a fun movie but I never tire of watching it. I share this film with new people every chance I get.

The shaving scene is the best film portrayal of non-sexual intimacy I can recall.

Few films are as effective at asking what living well is.

I can watch this move 10 times more, and enjoy it just as the first time I saw it.
What actors, what story ! perfection

Most definitely, this movie is a work of art. The acting is top notch. When watching this film, one can't help but to think where the Academy Award nods where? Robert Duvall? If I had never seen this guy on the screen, I could've sworn he was dead-on Cuban. lol He did a good job, as well as Richard Harris, and Shirely Maclaine.

I absolutely love this little gem of a movie! It is warm, humane and heart-melting without going overboard into sentimentality. I loved the performances of Robert Duvall and Richard Harris, their characters both moved me in different ways. Like a few other people here I discovered this film as a Sandra Bullock admirer, and I loved her warm, gentle performance too.

It's been a while since I've seen this movie but it has always been one of my absolute favorites. There's a scene where Richard Harris is alone (and drunk perhaps, but I can't remember) and lamenting the fact that he's not even six feet tall anymore when he used to be such a strapping sailor. Something about that moment always gets me...

this was an enjoyable watch indeed. looks like everybody here agrees on it too. clean sweep. i'm rather suprised it hasn't been released on dvd though. (according to discussions i see here.)

on midsummer evening,
i was away sleeping,
when you were dancing around the flag pole,
watching on tv, or out having a ball,
i was far and away sleeping,
untill the end of midsummer evening,
things i were supose to do,
the hours i slept through,
while you were jumping like frogs,
in the weather so hot,
midsummer evening, peter blues was away,
and i didn't awake, untill about midsummer day.

I absolutely adore this movie. I have the video version and wish they would come out with the DVD already. The acting is superb. Great script. Understated, poignant and very moving. I think Duvall deserved an Oscar nomination. I am Latina and his accent, his mannerisms were dead-on Cuban! And boy can he dance - check out "Assasination Tango".

Beautiful movie. Love it.

reply

Absolutely! I remember seeing it on TV many years ago and I've often thought about it since then. Today I ordered the DVD (Swedish version) and I can't wait to see it again. The acting was brilliant, Richard Harris' interpretation really touched me.

Can I interest you in some of my Huevos Rancheros?
