You obviously haven't seen many horror films. Watch "The Last House on the Left" and "Cannibal Holocaust".

I must agree with you. This is indeed a film with one of the scariest openers ever. There is nothing scarier than things that could happen. Being stuck in a house with a weirdo outside and NO phone....a faceless nut who not only tried to kill you, but is getting INTO your apartment repeatedly and no one can stop him!!
And the whole idea of him BEING there and you can't see him.....eerie and chilling!!

I agree--the older thrillers were so psychological--the stuff today is just not as well written...people are more visual today and don't want to listen or be patient enough for a story to unfold--I do think this is one of the scriest films of all time--too bad it was a tv movie--it would have been wonderful as a feature film. I just hope they don't try to make a bad sequel to the already bad remake of the original--something tells me, they'll rip this one off and it's not going to be pretty...

This film just freaked me out. It was the whole not knowing that got to me. Sometimes it's the stuff we don't see that is scary. I agree that we are in a period where more gore the better, skip the storyline and character development. I have nothing against gore. I just sometimes like a psychological type film.

I know I love them both. They're so great. Fred Walton is genieus with creating creepy atmospheric settings in the most mundane and safe environments. Just think something as simple, harmless and innocuous as babysitting kids in your typical, suburban neighborhood. The opening and ending were terrifying, the music was taut and so creepy, the performances were subtle and brilliant. The three scenes that get me the most are when Julia looks at the pad and realizes the page if gone, the "He's in there with you, look into the the living room" scene was so scary and the end scene was terrifying. Great horror films.

I was surprised at how creepy the beginning was. Didn't see that coming in a long shot.

The opening is the best part of the movie.

I agree that this is one of the scariest films of all time (in my opinion) and definitely an underrated gem! I first saw this on tv years ago just after I'd left home and moved into my first apartment and I was literally paralised with fear the entire time. Afterwards I couldn't even go to the bathroom until I calmed down a bit and watched something cheerful hahaa. I was CONVINCED there was someone in my apartment. It's a movie that I watch every couple of years when I want to get realllly scared, but I have this kind of sick dread while watching it. Other than the original Halloween, I've never been this creeped out by a movie in my life.

To me, Last House on the Left, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Exorcist, etc are not scary AT ALL. THIS is the scariest movie EVER MADE.

The ending of this movie was scary as well. I was not expecting him to be painted the same way as the brick wall so he could camouflage with it. When I saw the eyes suddenly open from the wall, I almost jumped out of my seat. That was one of the creepiest moments I've ever seen in a horror film. I loved the beginning, too.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

I agree, the tone and suspense is creepy! Great opening to a horror/suspense film. One of the best! 

reply

I fully agree. It was very well done, quite disturbing indeed. I re-watched it last night all alone in my bedroom and made me feel really tense all the time, even when it finished. 😥

I think the opening in the first film was slightly better executed. In saying that this opening was great too.
