Arnie could go at anytime?

This is my second post on this film.

My question is, what was it supposed to mean when Gilbert said "Arnie could go at any time"? I assume he means dying...but how? I understand that Arnie had a mental defect. But how did that give him a greater chance of dying? His brain was the problem, not his overall health. Or am I wrong? Can someone help clarify this for me?

*Spoilers*

I've watched the film, and read the book, and I can't remember them saying what it could be. I wondered that myself.

When a child isn’t born ‘normal’ sometimes doctors don’t predict a long lifespan. He could have had water on the brain also, that can cause retardation and limit a person’s life.
