Has a woman ever...

...portrayed a character with mental disabilities? I can name a few men off the top of my head-- Dicaprio, Bacon and Malcovich-- but I'm unable to think of any women.

Mary Steenburgen, Kirstie Alley, Meredith Baxter, I think Linda Purl has acted a role too.

And let's remember June in another of my favorite Johnny Depp films, "Benny & Joon". She was wonderfully played by Mary Stuart Masterson.

Then there's also:
Jessica Lange as the tragic actress Frances Farmer in "Frances"

Charlize Theron as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster". I figure anyone who kills in cold blood cannot be totally sane in my book, anyway.

(Need I also mention Faye Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest"? lol)

They have mental health problems not mental disabilities. The two are totally different.

Well it may not be mental disabilites like retardation, but Helena Bonham Carter is very good at acting out psychotic, or insane mental scenes.
If you look up the scene from Hamlet, where she plays Ophelia who has just gone mad, she does an amazing job.

Claire Danes in Temple Grandin. Amazing performance!

She's also playing a character with personality disorders in the new Showtime series, Homeland.

Many of the above methioned moview have women playing deranged characters and not autistic/retarded ones.

And the ones that do, s**k. I guess a retarded female is another thing altogether.
