shareWasn't she en route to go "back to school" at the end of the first movie. Her position at Lomax's company was a summer temp job I gathered. So the relationship might have been a summer fling type of thing too. Back then, I guess it was more special - nowadays, youngsters seem retarded towards it, liek James Dean being pulled apart. Have you seen Catherine Mary Stuart recently - she looks so different.

I wouldn't really call that a "summer fling," but more of a "weekend fling." WaB2 starts two days after we last see the couple together, and Gwyn is not mentioned throughout the entire movie. In fact, there is no reason to believe that they are in a relationship at all. Richie drools over several girls throughout the movie and obviously has no intention of going back to the states at the end of the movie.
Basically, either the character was cut for plot reasons OR (the usual reason) they couldn't sign her for the 2nd movie and they had to work the plot around the loss of her character.
