He got eaten by the crows. He was literally consumed by his own fears.

Oh Man! I remember that! I haven't seen this movie in a LONG time, and I happen to catch it when the credits rolled at the end of the movie. Darn! I'll look out for it. The music being played during the credits were especially depressing. Nothing like the good old days, huh?

Which reminds me, during the late 80s and early 90s, children movies were a bit dark, no? Or maybe mature is a better word? It seems like We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story, All Dogs Go to Heaven and even the Fievel movies have this sort of feel to them, something darker and more emotional than we have now. I miss that, especially with all the goody two shoes movies that are aimed for kids now (not to say that they're horrible, they were enjoyable.)

I guess we need Steven Spielberg to make another animated film...

Best of luck to you, mate!

Absolutely, guv'ner!

Actually, I have noticed that...

Darn right, they were enjoyable!

Maybe I could convince him to get back in that line of work...

Well, most of Don Bluth's movies (NIMH, American Tail, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Land Before Time) had serious themes to them. I think NIMH (which came out in 1982) was a lot darker than any of those movies you mentioned, but I know the point you were making, and it's just that when there were serious competitors for Disney, we saw something different that what disney had to offer, which usually meant they were darker. Hopefully with the influence of anime, we'll see a lot of new animators in America in these upcoming days that will make more serious animated movies again...

reply

That's what I believe will happen. The growing popularity of anime in North America symbolizes that more and more people understand that animation doesn't have to be aimed at kids, and then more American and Canadian animated series and films will be targeted at a more mature audience containing something other than humor.

I completely agree.
"Old-school" movies have more depth to them than nowaday movies. -_-

reply

I know that!!! What I meant was where did he go?????!!!!!!

reply

Oooooohhhhhhhh......THAT'S what you meant?

In that case, I think he went to Heck.

his death was oddly disturbing to me

Brother! Brother, wait! When I am all alone... when I have no one to scare, I get very frightened myself.

Metaphorically speaking, I think this scene was meant to signify the devil taking his soul, or possibly him returning to 'hell'.

Notice the gigantic pentagram that makes up the floor of the circus? Not only that, but he made the children sign over their souls with a contract signed in blood. Brilliant.

About anime, if this were one, it would:

a.) Be grabbed by 4kids and as a result:
b.) The plot would be slashed to ribbons
c.) The kids wouldn't sign in blood, the "ink" would be changed to purple
d.) Professor Screweyes would end up in HFIL (DBZ fans XD)

You forgot one...
"...I get very frightened myself. The crows might..."

you know, i havent seen this movie in a freaken long time, i mean, seriously, a long time. i only have like three clear memories of it:

1. rex at the start playing golf
2. rex dancing in the parade
3. and screweyes line about the crows

i always wondered what the hell he meant? like what the crows would actually do...

id be like the only kid in my class who wanted to discuss what the hell happened to him after we watched the movie on a rainy day.

reply

It was so strang ehow it happened too. Like they all covered him, and then he was just gone. I know in a movie like this they wouldn't get into gore or anything of the such, but it was just so strange.

Ahh, man was this movie full of allegory. Especially for a kid flick. The whole bit about any of what happens being possible due to advanced technology is just a cover, everything that happens in the movie is magic; the magic of human imagination, willpower, and knowledge.

There's lots of points I could bring up regarding the symbolism, the God/Devil dynamic of the brothers Cap. Neweyes and Prof. Screweyes; the analogies of violence, aggression, fear, anger and it's antithesis of intelligence, compassion, understanding, and civility with BrainGrain and BrainDrain; truth and meaning in human endeavor, whereas the Professor uses tricks and illusions to accomplish his feats of phobia the Captain uses his own god-given intellect and imagination to create the Wish Radio and his TimeShip; all sorts of metaphor and symbolism going on.

But one more thing regarding the death of the film's "Devil" the good Professor; at the end before being consumed by the crows, which are in fact his own fears (in fact if you'll remember frome earlier he always seems a bit nervous around them), he takes a pose like a scarecrow, a straw man if you will, who while seemingly terrifying was nothing more than a coward who preyed on the fears of others to make himself powerful, a manipulator who hides in the dark and evaporates in the light.

great post. dead on.

in a deleted scene, prof Screweyes tells the dinosaurs that a crow cost him his eye. Ever since he's been afraid of crows. So that's why he's scared of them, no idea why they ate him though.
