You're right. At first it seems lighthearted but I guess Prof. Screweyes was just supposed to be a dark character in a lighthearted movie.
shareHe was originally darker and was voiced by John Malkovich, but they replaced him and took out a few scenes with him to be more family friendly.
But it isn't just the inclusion of a dark character in a lighthearted movie, the film's art style is very inconsistent and so is its message, it has too many cooks in the kitchen.
P.S. No need to put "SPOILER" in the subject title, this film has been out for 22 years.
