Question about Ben (Eric Scott)

There was a scene in this where he and his wife are talking about the daughter they had who died and he looks and sounds as if he is really crying, he showed a lot of anguish. In real life that actor lost his wife after she developed some rare form of leukemia after having their baby. I wonder if this had already happened when he did that scene. Does anyone know?
