What the hell?

For the past 20-30 years, pedophiles have been portrayed by the media as the most horrible people imaginable, no matter how nice or decent they may seem, yet this movie takes a totally nonjudgmental approach about a 20-something soldier and his relationship with a 12 year old boy! And this was during WW2!

The soldier takes the boy in the dorms, yet none of his fellow soldiers question it, he holds nothing back at showing affection to the boy, is a basically good guy, etc. And the boy loves him as well! But he sodomized him and that went WAY too far!

I also found this really bothered me:( Though this film may contain a great deal of charm and delicacy, trying to avoid the subject matter, the truth is that the boy was only 11 in the original novel, which made me doubted if he really understand what he experienced and what is the difference between dependence and love. Also, in the original novel, Walt is totally a PEDO! I cant really see any similar delicacy in the film but only the sexual assault to that poor boy!I would recommend to read the original novel cos that is just far more harsh then we expected:( And even for the novel it is the memory from a boy who still valued that relationship highly, so the truth might be even more distressing:(

I thought it was interesting to see a non-judgemental approach to their relationship. Regardless of what the viewer thinks of the character or the relationship, it made for a good film.
