I saw this movie quite a while ago, and to be honest I found it a bit too long... This is the only Portuguese movie I have seen, but I would like to see more since I am learning Portuguese. Is there anyone who can recommend any good movies from Portugal?
Noite Escura (2004): well shot movie, with lots of potential, but it gets a bit over the top towards the end. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0413053/
A Comédia de Deus (1995): really strange movie, with a very peculiar sense of humour, it's worth watching, but see at your won risk. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112710/
Um Filme Falado (2003): Manuel de Oliveira's most well known film. With Catherine Deneuve and John Malkovich. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364093/
O Fantasma (2000): Sexually charged movie, that explores the gay sexuality, really high on shock value, only for those with a strong stomach. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0239381/
Also, Sorte Nula - The Trunk (2004), it's a very low budget film a mystery thriller thing with quite a lot of plot twists that keep you interested throughout the film. Some say it's not a good film at all, and while I agree the plot is not very strong I think it's quite entertaining and not boring as many of Portuguese films are. I really recommend it!
I really recommend this one: "Jaime" -> IMDb page at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120790/ This is the plot summary: «A woman takes her young son, leaves her husband and moves in with her lover. The boy, desperate to get his parents back together, becomes convinced that if only he can get his father's stolen motorcycle back everything will be fine again, so he sets out to get enough money to buy his father a new one.» Believe me, that description does not show half the quality of the movie. But I must advise it may be a little bit sad, because it shows a lot of the cruel reality of the life here in Portugal. It's not the kind of movie you can see everyday... But even if it's just once in a life, it's whorth it!
Excuse me for my english, but I'm still learning! I did my best, but probably I wrote something wrong...
have you ever heard of O Crime do Padre Amaro? About a priest that has sex with some chick. While you watch it, you see that many other priests commit adultery.
El crimen del padre Amaro is a film from Mexico in the Spanish language. (Maybe the person above saw a dubbed version.)
For people studying languages who want to see films in Portuguese, don't forget that Brazil is a Portuguese-speaking nation with a rich cinema history.
last 2 dvds: Dr. Cyclops (1940) & El espinazo del diablo (2001)
I recently watched Pedro Costa’s Casa De Lava. This is an outstanding film that doesn’t remind me of much else. I havent’ seen the Tourneur film that inspired it but it Costa has a very original visual style.
.Coisa Ruim .I'll see you in my dreams .Capitão Falcão
My fav one signed by Manoel de Oliveira is O Convento, but it seems impossible to find a copy these days. Ironically, Vale Abraão is the one I like least (amongst other things, the violence against animals didn't exactly help to conquer my sympathy).
Besides those films, I strongly recommend the animations by Regina Pessoa. Now, that is art.
