Did this give anime a bad reputation?

It makes people think anime is of this stereotype.

"You gotta be Fking kidding"-The Thing.

unfortunately, yes

thanks to this (an "La Blue Girl") everyone over the age of 40 automatically assumes that all anime is about tentacle rape

Yes it did give anime a bad reputation... at first. But bad publicity is better than no publicity at all and it only took a few years for anime to be recognized as much more than just school girls being violated by tentacles. If it wasn't for Urotsukidoji, anime wouldn't be anywhere near as big in the western world as it is today.

I do remember a rather sceptical article about anime in one of Norway's biggest tabloids back in the early 1990s, that mentioned this one because of the extreme content. I guess back then we hadn't been used to see this kind of mature animation in the west so it felt alienating and frightening. Nowdays I hear more people talk about Urotsukidoji as one interesting piece of apocalyptic storytelling rather than tentacle-sleaze. I like that, because it deserves attention.

Yep, this title specifically made the national press in the UK for it's content.

As usual the press presented a distorted picture, as a result people who didn't care about Manga thought all Manga is just porn, pathetic really but thats the general public for you.
