Filming was done in my Aunt's house

Just thought I'd drop a note to give fans some details of the filming of this movie. Caroline's house was my Aunt's house in Minneapolis, MN (I'd rather not give the exact address). The filming lasted 3 weeks and my Aunt, Uncle and cousins had to move out during that time. All of their belongings we're placed into storage and other furniture was brought in. They even go as far as putting up removable wallpaper to complete a room. Even though my Aunt's house was the main focus, the entire blocked help make the movie. Everyone agreed to decorate their houses again for the holidays and in the New Years party scene, those are all neighbors who stood-in for fun.

At the time I was 15 years old and everyday after school I walked to my Aunt's house to watch filming. It was the neatest thing I've ever seen. It was between winter/spring in MPLS but we had no snow. The snow you see on the roofs is paper cut-outs and the snow on the ground was sprayed there from a hose. I was able to witness many scenes be filmed and on March 5, 1992 I met Christian. I followed him to his trailer after a scene, he turned around and said "Well hello there" with a big smile. Because I had never met a star before I was completely shocked and couldn't get one word out of my mouth. I think he knew I was star-struck. :)

I enjoyed the movie when I finally saw the finished product but I can’t say I loved it. Because it has a family connection it is in my movie collection, and I watch it from time to time, but I am glad to hear it’s touched so many others.

Wow! what an interesting story. I really like that movie a lot. I've seen a couple of movies that were filmed in Minneapolis, besides "Untamed Heart" there's "Purple Rain",. And I have to say that Minneapolis looks like a very nice city, I like to go visit one day.
I have one question ,: Is the diner in the the movie, an actual diner that is still open for business? I believe it's called "Jim's Coffee Shop"?
Or is it under a different name?

reply

sorry---Jim's is no longer open. I cannot remember it's original name---but it was a restaurant...just not Jim's.

This movie really does Minneapolis justice...the park, the night clubs, the ice skating rink....the ONLY problem with the movie? It showed Minnesotans as whiney. I must say...there are not alot of WHINEY Minnesotans up here. We have strong Scandinavian accents.

Cool about the house being where your relatives lived. AND getting to meet Slater---OMG---Lucky YOU!!!

reply

I must agree with you on the accent thing. My mom moved to Minnesota with her husband that is from there and I go often to visit. Anyway, do you know if the building used for "Jim's Coffee shop" is still standing and if so, where it is?

Life is for living, we all know, and I dont wanna live it alone...

Jim's is closed and the building is vacant for some reason, has been for years. I heard Jim made so much money renting out his resturaunt to the filmmakers, that he could afford to retire.

I am under a new screen name these days. I forgot I posted out here so I'm sorry all these posts have went unanswered.

Yes, where they worked was a real place. I have not been over that area in many years so I have no idea if it's still open. Since someone else said it was not, it's probably not.

I did not get to meet Marrisa. I only seen her when they filmed the scene when he was on her front porch and then ran away down the street. My Aunt, Uncle and cousins got to meet the entire cast. They got autographs, pictures, and one of my cousins even kept cigg. butts that Christian put out around the house. He's a chain smoker. They have a really nice keepsake book for this whole movie.

My Aunt has since passed away and my Uncle and cousins no longer live there so if you're ever in MPLS and want to drive by, the address is 1535 Jefferson St NE. It's pretty cool to drive by and see the house that was in the movie. :)

Also, someone asked about my age. I was 15 when the movie was filmed (almost 16) and I'll be 30 on May 7th.

Take care,
Angie

Thank you so much for giving the address! I am a fanatic of this film and have always wanted to drive by the house just to see it. I will be going to MN to visit family this summer and will def. go by and snap a few pics. Also does anyone know where Adam's apartment is located?

That's funny that you say Christian Slater is a chain smoker, I read on the Pump Up The Volume board that he didn't smoke when he did Pump Up The Volume, and he got sick on the set due to it. It would be a shame if that role turned him into a chain smoker.

very cool. thanks for sharing.

this movie caused me to fall in love with Marisa too. are there any real "carolines" out there?

btw, i'm from Wisconsin and can relate to the Minnesota references.

reply

Yup - me too. I've had a crush on Marisa ever since this film. This is embarrassing to say, since I am the same age as her, that I go and check to see who she is dating, etc, on the web. Puppy love at *my* age. Moan.

I don't know if she shares any traits with Caroline - but I bet she has a big heart like Caroline! I would like to think so anyway.

Now I'll have to watch a bunch of football and crush beer cans so I can feel manly again, LOL!

LOL That was so cute.

Don't feel bad about falling in love with Marisa. I fell in love with Christian in this film.. and I was already in my 20's.. LOL That scene on the escalator when he touches her hand.. *sigh* He's so beautiful. Wow.. I'm 32 and I'm still crushing on him.. LOL

To the original poster, that's a pretty awesome story. Sorry about your aunt passing way.
