If this is not the greatest marriage of image + music tell me what is?

That amazing orchestral montage at the end. In terms of music, colour, arrangement, lighting, metaphor, expression, symbolism and pure style I don't think it will ever be beaten. Its such a powerful, emotional and devestating 5 minutes of cinema.

reply

Agreed. However, I tend to think that the whole film is a perfect marriage of image + music, not just the blindingly good last 5 minutes.

RIP Ian....

reply

the double life of veronique would be close

reply

Other than The Good, The Bad & the Ugly yeah it sure is.

reply

Yes the circular duel at the end.

Another thaT SPRINGS TO MIND IS THE BUILD UP TO THE BELL TOWER SCENE in Black Narcissus. That menacing music or the whole ballet scene in The Red Shoes.

But for me the two greatest film composers of all time are Priesner and Morricone.

reply

Yes! Thank you for mentioning those two Powell/Pressburger movies. The Red Shoes has very memorable musical moments.

You know what you are? You're the son of a thousand fathers. All bastards like you.

reply

I'd vote for "The Double Life of Verónique". The chorus that sings Weronika is extraordinarily beautiful.

But "Bleu" it's quite close.

Anyway let's don't forget movies like "Amadeus" or Bergman's "The Magic Flute".

reply

I totally agree with everything you said! And Red and White and the Decalogue are pretty sweet, too. The Magic Flute is...magical.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

reply

I havent seen three colours blue, but The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and her Lover also marries picture and music beautifully!

reply

I would say that Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" has the edge on this one. In fact it has the edge on most films in that respect.

However, I am not saying that the music does not work *extremely* well/beautifully in "Blue".

"Once Upon a Time in the West" (Ennio Morricone) anyone?

reply

this is the first movie i've seen where the music is actually part of the storytelling.
i love preisner's music, and 'double life of veronique' is fantastic.

reply

I agree totally.

Also loved "The Double Life of Verónique".

I can put either cd on and really become affected by the mood created.

Another two I think are worth mentioning: the finale of Fitzcarraldo (Herzog) and the short film Eaux d'artifice (Kenneth Anger).

The best marriage of image + music in cinema is without a doubt Koyaanisqatsi. Simply stunning.

But that's only because the automated teller machineyolatrolamaton isn't working.

reply

It was very weak compared to finale of The Fountain and if you are talking about marriage of image and music don't forget about Sunshine, it's weak movie but visuals and music are stunning. Other good combinations of image+music are Heat (especially unforgetable Pacino in helicopter going to highway), Gladiator (many scenes), Waltz with Bashir (whole movie is just videoclip for excellent soundtrack)...

If you are looking for devastation watch Lilja 4-ever, listening to Rammstein - Mein Herz brennt after movie will be never same as before Lilja 4-ever.

Ehhhhhh, HELLO???

AMADEUS, duh!!

reply

Indeed. Blatant use of Mozart in three colours blue too.

Amadeus, its exciting to watch as his life unfolds, the life of a slightly mad genius. Similar in theme to the Korean Chihwaseon where the artist is a painter instead. Amadeus was practically perfect.

Three colours blue hits all sorts of other notes though, or tones should I say :) its definitely blue.

reply

i agree. i am still waiting for another movie of this quality to come out!!! and juliette binoche is superbe, she doesnt get the extreme recognition she deserves!

reply

Jim Wall

Come to think of it in European cinema maybe only Almodovar has inherited any part of Kieslowski's genius

reply

There have been many greater marriages of score with direction for sure (the musical theme and technically marvelous finale can feel slightly overbearing) though rarely, if ever has the score assimilated itself as a character and metaphor as it so elegantly does here.

Kieslowski's often brilliant eye and Binoche's perceptive soulfulness solidify this film's reputation.

reply

The first seven minutes of Antichrist (2009).

reply

Darktree

Yes I was impressed both with 'Antichrist' as a film and the opening shot in black and white, played to that wonderful classical music, but sadly it does not beat the end of 'Blue'

I'm also certain that the end musical montage of 'Donnie Darko' paid homage to '
Blue'

reply

Yeah, the first few minutes of Antichrist is probably the funniest thing I've ever seen. Really reminded me of Barney (from the Simpsons) and his "art film". Nice to see Von Trier taking the piss.

It was beaten already 70 years ago by a Disney production called "Fantasia" and again in 2000 by "Fantasia 2000". Also, 2001: Space Odyssey has an excellent marriage of sound and picture. Nonetheless, the ending of Bleu is fantastic.
