this movie is incredibly boring

It's not everybody's cup of tea I know. I suppose you have to be interested in the cinematography just as much as the storyline. After all, the displaying of human emotions is a key component of life so why not in film as well. In the case of Three Colors Blue it's hardly a happy film such as Amelie was, which makes it more difficult to watch. I did like the film though but I too find it hard to love it.

Aw, you missed some of the best bits; I don't know how far you got, but it seems likely you didn't see my 2 favourite scenes: the "composition" sequence between Julie and Olivier, and the ending montage, of which Donnie Darko's end sequence is a pale copy. I don't know, maybe you need to be in the right "mood" to watch "Blue"; it's certainly slower-paced, and more symbolic and self-consciously 'arty', than the other two films in the trilogy.

OK. This will be condescending, but oh well.

You don't put a 6 year old in front of Shawshank and expect them to "get it." They want Barney and Teletubbies. And, while discrepencies in maturity become less blatant in our 20s, they still exist.

Blue is a mature masterpiece that requires a lot of experience, maturity, and intelligence to enjoy. I would say that few 30 year olds will enjoy it and far fewer 20 year olds. Give it another try in ten or twelve years.

Well said! I get tired of both extremes in attitude --

1. You're an immature idiot if you don't understand or love a film.
2. You're a pretentious snob if you do.

Great comment.

I feel like almost IMDB page for an 'arty' movie has these threads where someone calls it boring and the rest of the discussion devolves into ad-hominem from both sides. I saw this movie about the time your wrote your post 6 years ago or so.

I really enjoyed the film at the time, but will I enjoy it the same again? If I do does that mean I'm still a 'pretentious snob'? If I don't am I now an 'immature idiot'?

Movies mean different things to different people. Sure, some movies are better than others, but lets reserve all the character assassinations and condescending judgements for the people truly deserving of it.

This the best film I've ever seen (if that can be said on any particular film) and I'm 19. I don't think it's about being mature or intelligent. This film certainly requires concentration and an open mind. It's beautiful and so full of emotion that you can almost touch it. Every time I watch this I can't keep thinking about it for the next few days. It's an enourmous masterpiece and I wish more people would appreciate it.

Yes, what you say is so true. I first had the good fortune to see the trilogy in the theatre in '93-'94. So powerful. The beauty and honesty of the films stay with you, different images bubbling to the surface days, even weeks later. The new Criterion blu-ray discs are exceptionally well done. Here's hoping Blue, White and Red find a new generation of young viewers with open minds and a desire to give these wonderful films the concentration they deserve.

not every film is for everybody.
it may be boring if you have no time for your feelings. and ...were you expecting a thriller when you pushed the "play" button?
it's a great art film and its imperfections are those which make it so blue. follow the "blue line" in the film and you'll understand

I've seen this film twice, and both times I've found it slow moving to the point of it being Bergmanesque, heh. It's worth watching, even if it does take several sittings [and it feels longer than an hour and a half]. I would recommend Rouge also.

yes this movie is the most beautiful film i've ever seen (and i'm 21)! the acting and story, lighting etc is fabulous. Oh my God the music, i do not understand the person who is not deeply moved by 'Song for the Unification of Europe' the most emotional piece of music i've ever heard.

This might not be a movie for everyone but to say that Bleu "it's incredibly boring"??? That's too much IMO.

I guess this dude haven't seen "Umberto D." or Godard's "Notre Musique". I love those movies but I can see why so many people find them tedious and boring.

In this case (Bleu), I find an interesting and compelling drama with wonderful music, top notch acting, gorgeous cinematography and marvelous directing. Too many good things to be boring.

Albeit some people accustomed to fast paced movies might call it boring since it doesn't contain any explosion, shootings, over-the-top performances, gore and excessive violence. It doesn't have neither lots of "F" words nor silly jokes. Everything that your typical blockbuster "masterpieces" provides you every summer.

Call me snob but I prefer any movie by Kieslowski any time instead "Apocalypto" or "Transformers" and the likes. Don't you?

...but not for the reasons you might think.

I'm sorry, but the original poster is right.

I tried to enjoy this film; in fact, I was looking forward to it, because I was on this great streak of picking out some great foreign films. The dvd cover describes the movie as "Mysterious...Sexy" and a winner of some festivals. How could I go wrong watching it?

It did not live up to its intentions and credentials.

First, I am not a blockbuster freak: I can do without gratuitous sex, violence, or cheap laughs in a movie. And I was not expecting the like in this film. Just give me a good script, character development, some tension, and believable characters (if the movie is to portray real life).

There was no character development. Character-driven movies require it. This movie never allowed us to. Every character here is two-dimensional: we know all of their basic motivations, but that's it. We don't know their history: what brought them to this point in their lives?

And please don't tell me I'm not interpreting the scenes rightly. I understand the symbolism. I understand her need for isolation.

Give me Sideways, Shawshank, Stand by Me, Elephant Man...all great character-driven movies over this pretentious film.

You're putting Apocalypto in the same class of flicks as Transformers !!??!!?? Are you out of your fricking ..... ?????
I mean Apocalypto, notwithstanding what you might think of its director, is an extremely original and touching movie with an epic dimension and cinematic scenes of incredible originality and complexity. It's one of the best pictures in the year of its making and I often wish that Mel Gibson had had the resources to make more epics like this one. A beautiful movie and a superb achievement. Perhaps you meant something else or perhaps ... worse, I don't know. But please think twice before making such comparisons (that being said I got your point with Transformers) !

hmm, I wouldn't go as far as to say that this film is boring, but I was underwhelmed at the end I must say. However, this is my first viewing of any film in the series and future viewings may improve my judgement, as it seems to these days. I just felt that the plot/story was horrible, as it jumped from scene to scene too quickly (ironically) from the death coping moments to the moment she and that other fellow has sex. Oh then, she moves out in a flash (if you still think this is for mature viewers entirely, then you're wrong) and then all she does is try to cope with it all, until she apparantly 'lives' again. I don't like it, maybe white or red may be better. Coincidently, I loved the double life of veronique (odd, isn't it?)

Finished watching Bleu..I found the ending underwhelming. So she finds refuge and healing in music and love. But I wonder, what if...

What if? Well in that case we would have had a different film, wouldn't we? Kieslowski's earlier "No End", for example. A story can only really be about one person; it's a bit pointless to complain that they aren't someone else. What if Citizen Kane was a modest chap? What if Hamlet was a bit more decisive? Please.

Incidentally, La Binoche is 45 now, and still "hot to tears", in my humble. And the close-ups are (1) the style of the film (there are extreme close-ups of various objects throughout) and (2) there to make the most of her extremely subtle and expressive performance.

And a film which is about someone who loses everything shouldn't start with a shock? How would that work?

I can respect that you don't like the film (I didn't much like "Diary of a Country Priest") but either you could come up with some better excuses or just admit that it didn't connect with you for unfathomable reasons. Sometimes that happens with a film; could even be that you just caught it on the wrong day when you were in the wrong mood...

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.
