Major disagreement here.

I think it followed Kafka's book very faithfully.

I think Kyle MacLachlan was excellent as Josef K.

The film did do justice to the book because the film maker refused to embelish the story as many others would have done.

I also think that filming this in Prague was a nice touch. Prague is a very haunted city with ghosts everywhere and you can really sense it in this film.

i recently read that the book was put togetter wrong. that the chapters were put in the wrong order and that one of the chapters was missing and put out sepratly as a short story. i also heard that there migh be other chapets to the book that were burned or are pressumed missing taken by the nazis.

Kafka never intended his works to be published which is why so many were unfinished. At the end of his life he willed that his works be burned. His friend and executor, Max Brod refused to carry out this request and his works were published.

reply

yes but his gf had alot of his work some of it she burned and some of it she kept which was later taken by the nazis.

reply

Such a shame it was.

Kafka has such a gift. I think he was a tragic character. He lived a short and ordinary life. Yet he had a secret life filled with torment and terror. He wrestled with many internal demons.

I believe he did not want the world to see his true self which is why he hid his work from the public. Reminds me of what Thoreau once said about most men living "lives of quiet desperation".

reply

Pretty much all you said, yes.

I agree with EnemyOfTheState,
the movie is a very faithful adaption for the screen.
Really, one of the more faithful book adaptions
I've seen for any book... and Kyle McLachlan did an
excellent job.
Filming in Prague really adds to the atmosphere, and
probably gives us a good idea of what Kafka was actually
seeing.

reply

The adaptation was a bit of a mis-fire and the acting was uneven. Kyle was good Alfred Molina was the best of the bunch.

Its that man again!!
