I think mostly the editing is this films weakness. Pacing gets off, and some scenes are very harshly inserted. Wyatt having his first personal encounter with Josie is VERY abrupt. Great movie, but certain things I notice more and more.
Yeah, a few things about this movie might turn-off serious film critics with it's almost comical approach to westerns and questionable editing. I kind of look at as western satire in a way. Although, Siskel and Ebert really liked it. I don't think they said much about the editing, but they did brag about Kilmer's performance. I often wonder if I would like this film as much without Kilmer's charming performance as Doc Holiday.
Anyhow, one possible reason why the editing and the whimsical scenes in the movie happened is because the original director was fired during the filming and the screenplay was re-written. Could have been a time issue to be honest....
Apparently the studio didn't like the film... lol... they were hoping that critics wouldn't see it. Which is explained by Ebert in this review. I love the film, its my favorite western for sure. Perhaps the difficulties in the filming process actually played out in their favor for the final product. I say it's a classic film... 9 out of 10 from me.
TS will make you come back again and again if not to just laugh at the scenes but also for a good entertaining movie. One scene always makes me laugh is when Wyatt Earp puts his gun into the mouth of one of the cowboys and pulls the trigger. lol....
Sure, it's not supposed to be funny but the movie is unintentionally hilarious but for some odd reason, it works.
