I haven't but I've ordered the French DVD off ebay so I'll have to get back to you. Everyone seems to be slating it. Surely it can't be THAT bad?

Righhhhhttttt.... Gotr the DVD... And it isn't that bad! I quite enjoyed it. Surprisingly high production values, good direction from Hooper and fine acting from Englund. I enjoyed it and if you liked Hooper's The Mangler I'd recomend it.

This film lies in that uncomfortable zone between good and bad: mediocre. I should have been warned when the the VHS box containing this film was stained with cat pee (at least I assume it was a cat; I didn't send it to the lab). Turns out to be an apt review.

The story starts off strong, but gets bogged down in soap operatics. It has a few impressive visuals, and the performances aren't bad, horror-wise, but it plods to its predictable end. 5/10 stars, only because I'm generous.

I like it but I'm a pervert! Englund is great as DeSade and the girls are eye candy. The Egyptian locations are unusual but the interiors look a bit studio based. Hooper pulls off a few nice sequences and the whole thing is quite cruel and kinky without being too graphic. It's a Harry Allen Towers production and harks back to his earlier sexploitaition epics.

It's pretty average. Definitely not one of Englund's best performances but he's still good. Zoe Trilling is wonderful and gorgeous

This movie was so bad that when I think about it now, I picture Robert Englund in the love scenes with Zoe Trilling or the two girls on the bed. (Ooooh, menage a trois!) It wasn't fair that the disgustingly handsome Egyptian/Iranian/whatever got the love scenes. I cheered when Paul stabbed him! That face was frightening; it looked like he was twisting the knife!

I think that Robert was good-looking enough to play the love scenes, but I think he looked good anyway with that long curly hair and dressed in white. Was that his real hair, or a wig? He looks good in long hair.

I have a copy and give it a 6 out of 10. I like Englund and Finley, and the cinematography is beautiful. What I also appreciate, and which few realize, is the amount of dialogue that's taken from Sade's Philosophy in the Bedroom, a book that's featured in the plot. In fact, Eugenie and Chevalier are characters in the book and Sabina fills the Madame Saint-Ange character to a degree. Genie's father, Dr. Matteson, is a combination of the book character's parents. The father is a libertine, secretly involved with Saint-Ange, her mother is a virtuous, pious woman who objects to her daughter spending time with Saint-Ange. In the movie, Dr. Matteson is a secret libertine who is outwardly a holy roller.

There are also references to some of Sade's other works. I think having read a lot of Sade, I like the movie more than most. What derails it for me is the descent into standard slasher fare. It could have been so much better if taken in a different direction.
