In the film, Paul tells someone that he is a descendant of the "kinky old reprobate" (that's what Robert called him in his autobiography, A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams), Maquis De Sade, but when I watch it, it seems like he's a reincarnation of him because he wants to get revenge on Genie pretty badly.
shareI never saw it as reincarnation. I think Paul, as a descendant, was deeply immersed in his ancestor's history and tried to emulate him. He was also mad. Genie resembled his ancestor's nemesis, so he attempted to avenge the marquis, going so far as to dress like him or even become him. Of course, by that point, he was bat-sh!t crazy.
I've had some pretty wild dreams about Robert Englund as this character. He was so handsome in this!
