57 chevy, and they were classics even then. He was a rich kid, so maybe it's not too implausible, but most high school kids had ordinary, newer cars.

Those classic hot rods at the drive in were totally fake. In those days, you saw cars like that ONLY in magazines and car shows. Believe it or not, there are more classic hot rods on the street now, than there were then. People who owned them didn't want to risk damaging them by driving on the street.

I don't know if Pirate was a "rich kid" but during the movie he mentions that his father is a used car salesman. Which makes it a lot more plausible that he would have such a cool car.
