Does any one know what happened to Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers? We are using the book in a psych class at school and the question was brought up.
Thanks

I read this book a few years ago and I still wonder what happan to Lafayette and Pharoah. I had no idea there was a movie.Maybe I'll ask Oprah.

I am also using this book for a class and was just wondering how similar the book is to the movie. Are they pretty much the same? I was going to rent the movie, but my local video store doesn't carry it so i'm wondering if i should even try to track it down elsewhere. If you could let me know the book compares to the movie, i would appreciate it. Thanks! :)

He didn't die. I actually met Alex Kotlowitz and he said the he prefers not to disclose too much information on their current where abouts since they gave up so much of their lives for the book. Laffie got married. They both live near Horner but not in it.

reply

I'm sorry john, but Laffie's bio states that he's been murdered in the streets of Chicago.

If you don't eat this dead animal, I'll eat five!!

reply

The actor who played Laffie was killed, not the actual person talked about in the book.

I read this book several months ago and also would like to know what happened to the two children, but I guess we'll likely never find out.

Excuse me do you know how to get a hold of this movie?

In a news article I read a few years back, the real names of the boys are Lafayette and Pharoah Walton. There is also a picture of one of the boys at this web site. http://www.aliciapatterson.org/APF0901/Shames/Shames.html

Wow. I thought he used pseudonyms, but I guess not...

Having their real last names made it easy to do a quick digging around. I couldn't find anything on Lafayette. But as for Pharoah:

Pharoah, as an 18 year old, narrates an segment of This American Life (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/139/ghosts-of-elections-past)

Unfortunately, he's gotten into some trouble as an adult:

It's the cached version since the original article isn't available anymore. Anyway, in 2007 he was arrested with 3 others in a stolen truck. He gave a fake name to the officer and was charged with obstruction of justice. He was also wanted on a felony warrant in Jackson County. :-(

It's a really weird article (you have to scroll to the bottom) since it gives out the full address of him and each of his friends. I have no idea why they would do that. It's also a weird story because of the circumstances of the truck theft... but anyway, that's the sordid story.
