Underrated

Extremely underrated film, I learned from an interview that after the movie was filmed, the film The Hand That Rocks The Cradle was also completed the studio predicted instant balefire blockbuster success, and the people behind The Temp opted to change key events in the film in the hope that the film could successfully compete with The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.

Unfortunately, this did not happen, The Temp was not well received.

However, I thought the film was brilliantly ambiguous, even thought it was not the premise that Tom Holland originally wanted, and even though certain scenes were clearly interpolated (scenes later filmed and added) and incompatible with the original plot structure and original characterizations.

Timothy Hutton's portrayal throughout the entire film, including the added scenes which he brilliantly mastered to the point that it was clear he essentially refused to allow the new characterizaion and plotline to alter his original portrayal, was not only flawless, but off-the-charts, in the realm of Ben Kingsley and David Thewlis (Naked) and James Dean and Daniel Day-Lewis and Marlon Brando and Derek Jacobi, a realm which should have been impossible for him to reach considering that The Temp's original premise and linear characterizaion was fathomlessly inferiour to films like Gandhi, House Of Sand And Fog, Naked, East Of Eden, In The Name Of The Father, On The Waterfront, etc, etc.

Unlike most people who despised the denouement, I thought it was beyond ingenious because she is not stereotypically killed, the director treated all of Kris' actions ambiguously, the sum total of her explanations were logical and could be valid, Peter could have been completely deluded, and we never learn whether or not the police believe the evidence Peter perceives exposes her motivations and guilt.

Bravo, Tom Holland and Timothy Hutton.

Are you just nuts? It is drivel plan and simple. It is not underrated, 1 star is generous.

Jeez, are you one of the (loosely) writers?

Uh.....yer scarin' me here.
Please tell me that your name "TemporaryOne-1" has nothing to do with this movie. Hopefully it's a temporary online name you made for yourself so that you could post this comment anonymously.

You want to compare "The Temp" with Gandhi, East of Eden, and On the Waterfront.

I'll give you this, your review greatly enertained me, just like "The Temp" did.

If your insider information is accurate, I appreciate those tidbits.

I compared Hutton's acting performance with the performances of highly-respected acting performances.

It was not my intent to compare the film to other films that are regarded as masterpieces.

The extra information came from a video interview with Timothy Hutton that I watched on either Youtube or Google videos, thanks to whoever uploaded it.

I selected the name because I was not sure whether or not I would continually post on IMDb. The word combination of "Temporary One" surged upward because it was the name of a Fleetwood Mac song that I liked. IMDb added "-1" because the user name I selected was already taken.

I have about 85 fave male performances (because I have about 375 fave films), they are not mainstream, and they include:

Nikolai Burlyayev - Ivanovo Detstvo
Ben Kingsley - House Of Sand And Fog
Aleksandr Kajdanovsky - Stalker
David Thewlis - Naked
Ian McKellen - Macbeth
Edward James Olmos - Stand And Deliver
Adrien Brody - Ten Benny
Max Von Sydow - Hour Of The Wolf
Jason Robards - Long Day's Journey Into Night
Sean Bean - The Field
Rod Steiger - The Pawnbroker
John Lone - Iceman
Jeff Bridges - American Heart
Alain Delon - Le Samourai

Hmmmm...interesting stuff. So does Mr. Hutton in "The Temp" rate in your top 85, and if so, where?

Please read my review of this movie and you will see that I really enjoy it.

Interesting all of the positive emotions here on IMDB for this movie. Even though I can enjoy the movie straight, my opinion is that the movie can only be taken seriously on the "so bad it's good" level, but apparently they got a lot correct with this movie. It's too bad they didn't put some real effort into it - they might have come up with something great.

I read your review, very nice! I voted a "yes" helpful vote.

I remember the original reviews were negative, I am glad IMDb reviewers are kinder!

Faye Dunaway too often resorts to that "here-I-am" exaggerated over-acting. In 1997's Rebecca, she wrecked the beginning with her flamboyant, pompous charade.

Ahh now that buddy thing is something to be analyzed. If the film is presented from the point of view Peter, then that proves he is paranoid/unstable. He cannot possibly have four special confidants whom he confides all his secrets to, and he cannot immediately suspect all four of them of plotting against him the moment a new office empoylee is promoted to his titular position.

I voted a 9, then changed it to 10. Votes should be opinions for individual films, not as comparison votes against other films. But IMDb's voting system is rank and flawed. Look at their top 250 - every week a brand-new released film is on that list, while countless films with higher ratings are excluded from the list because not enough people voted for those films to qualify them for that list.

Timothy Hutton's role in the Temp would rate in the bottom portion of my 85.

Oh my gosh TemporaryOne-1, you're killing me over here.
You are the only movie reviewer on earth that could bring up all time classic films and then turn around and call "The Temp" underrated and give it a 10. You can kiss your reviewer credibility goodbye. (To readers that have not read my review....I enjoyed the movie so much I would have liked to have given it a 10, but I could not do that in good conscience so I gave it an 8).

I’m glad that you enjoyed the movie. It is a lot of fun, I’ll admit. I think this is a good party movie, to watch it while talking and eating popcorn with people and quoting out the lines like “YOU’RE BLOWIN’ IT MAN!” and “YOU’VE GOT THIS PROBLEM.” Other good party movies are: Star Wars (“would someone please move this big walking carpet out of my way?”), Back to the Future (“Hello? Hello? Is anybody home? Think, McFly, think!” “Well now of course not Biff”.), Aliens (“’Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?’ ‘No. Have you?’”, and The Blues Brothers (“DO YOU SEE A LIGHT?”).

Take care and thanks for the chat.

Agree entirely with you.
This is a moral parable, and the Temp is also a devil-sent Temptress.
