Playing the guitar

Whaley's IMDb bio notes that he "(d)oes all his own musical work whenever he plays a musician in a movie." Doesn't specifically say he plays guitar, but I suppose that pretty much covers it.

Then again, in an interview with the Onion A.V. Club published April 9, 2015, regarding his role as guitarist Robby Krieger in "The Doors" (1991), he said:

I mean, with all due respect, because those guys were brilliant, but The Doors were never really in my top 10 music. [laughs] But I had to listen, because I don’t play the guitar and I had to pretend I was playing the guitar, so I had to learn, because Oliver [Stone] was very adamant that we all obviously looked like we were playing.

So, either the info from his bio is inaccurate, or, more likely, he hadn't yet learned guitar when filming "The Doors." (Then again, again, he said "I don't" rather than "I didn't," so...  )
